Can't seem to pass any exams

    Hi Everyone,

    I have been on another71.com for over 2 years now and have always been to this site for motivation. I have taken over 16 exams and not have passed a single exam. I am starting to rethink maybe the CPA path is not right for me. I am losing the motivation and the will to continue with these exams. I have just received my failing score for REG this morning.

    I have been Yeager CPA review and supplements with Ten-Point Combo through out the whole process. My highest score I ever got on all the exams are REG: 65 (6x), BEC 73 (5x), AUD 73(6x), and FAR 59 (2x). I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I have always re-write my notes, read the ninja notes, listen to the audio, practice 2000+ multiples choice and make sure I score 80+ on the exam on Wiley Test Bank.

    I am willing to purchase a whole new review course before I give up on this journey, I was thinking Becker and start fresh again. Should I stay with my current review material or go ahead and purchase Becker review?

    Any advices would be greatly appreciated.

    That sounds like a rough journey so far. My advice would be dont give up! You have put in over 2 years of time into these exams you should get something in return for it!

    I agree that you should start fresh with a new review course. You cant really go wrong with Becker. I used it for Reg and passed on 1st try. I wished I had used it for FAR. I really like the Gleim MCQ as they do a good job with their explanations. Also, I would say to focus on one exam first and dont move on until you pass that exam. Chose the one section that is giving you the most trouble and just go all out until you pass it. Once you pass the first you will get extreme confidence to move on to the rest. I failed FAR 3x and did not consider moving on to another section because i was lacking confidence and had no motivation to start learning new material. You can start spinning your wheels if you move from section to section with no pass.

    Dont give up!

    FAR- PASSED (11/13)
    REG- PASSED (2/14)
    BEC- PASSED (5/14)
    AUD- PASSED (8/14)

    If it's important to you, you will find a way. If it isn't, you will find an excuse.

    For me, I felt like I understood the material better after going through it with Becker, compared to the first time I went over the material using Yaeger. Of course this could be due to the fact that I had already been exposed to these topics with Yaeger and whatever I covered using Becker just reinforced my understanding of each area.

    All I can say is out of the 4 sections, I was only able to pass Audit using just Yaeger. But I switched over to Becker (company paid for it) after my failures with Yaeger, and I have been able to pass both BEC and FAR. I am scheduled to take REG in April so hopefully my passing streak continues.

    Anyway, good luck and hope you find the right review course for you!

    FAR - 77
    AUD - 75
    REG - 78
    BEC - 83

    Oh, I feel your pain and I have been there! *hugs*

    When was the last time you went to the doctor for a checkup? I ask this in all seriousness. My iron was dangerously low and I didn't start passing exams until that was regulated. The doc couldn't believe I was even trying with my levels as low as they were.

    You have gotten two 73 so you are close and you can get 75s. Keep fighting!

    PS: I like the Gleim Online system. It breaks the material into 20 subsections and you can drill down within each section and really target your weak areas.

    Figure out which way you learn best and go from there. Maybe Yaeger isn't for you . I'm using Yaeger and passed FAR, AUD and REG on the first try…think about why Yaeger is not good for you (if they aren't a good fit that's perfectly fine but I don't think it's the material that Yaeger covers necessarily, but maybe the way in which it's delivered). Another thing you might want to do is to dig deeper into your study plan. From what you've mentioned, it sounds like you are doing a lot of great things but it might be good to take a second look at the things your are doing to study. Yaeger does have an 88% pass rate which is actually higher then Beckers. Make sure you evaluate how you are studying as well. It you are not doing everything necessary, it doesn't matter which review course you use…Good luck in your studies! I admire your perseverance!

    I found out that I had ADD about 4 years into the 5 year trip on the slow train through hell. My doctor told me that she was going to “take control of the situation” after I threw up all the way home from Houston (about 3 1/2 hours away). My blood pressure was 140/125, 24 hours after the exam. She was shocked that I hadn't had a stroke or a heart attack. Believe me she tested for both! She had previously done the work up on my son when the public school system said he was ADD (legally they aren't supposed to say that, but they did). She had copies of the reports from all of the specialists that evaluated him and one of them said “Child exhibits learned behavior. Mother should be tested.” He wasn't ADD I was! I've been on Adderall ever since.

    Then about 6 months later I found out that I had a tumor in my thyroid. I knew I had Hashimoto's disease before I graduated from college but I never put two and two together. Your thyroid controls things like fatigue, insomnia and it helps keep you from becoming mentally confused. I would sit down at the Prometric computer, read a question and not have a clue what I was supposed to do. When my thyroid meds were regulated, I passed. But it was obvious when they weren't. Being confused, tired, and sleepy are not conducive to passing the CPA exam. I took my last test in February 2013, got my score March 8th and found out March 12th that I had thyroid cancer. My Oncologist and my Endocrinologist don't have a clue how I managed to function much less pass the last exam.

    But the beauty of a CPA license is that it only has one number on it, a license number! There are no scores listed. The number of attempts isn't shown. It's just the most beautiful number in the world and all of the pain, anxiety, stress and sleepless nights are worth it! If I had known earlier what was going on, things might have been easier or at least faster. I can't change any of it and neither can you. So I will second Baxter's advice to get a checkup. Talk to your doctor about the exam and explain what it is like. They may be able to help you. Good luck and keep us posted!

    MustPass: I do not regret taking the exam 28 times. What I DO regret is not going to the doctor sooner to find out what was blocking my success. I had symptoms for years and ignored them because everyone else was more important. I cried with relief when I found out there was a valid reason.

    Baxter if you don't mind me asking, what were your symptoms?

    1. Extreme fatigue not matter how long I slept – I literally had to force myself to get out of bed and function through my daily life, i.e, get through a day at work, deal with my family, many times I just went straight to bed and couldn't go one more second;

    2. I felt weak ALL the time;

    3. inability to focus and retain info (i could study for hours and it would look brand new the next day);

    4. So grumpy and irritable (God Bless my sweet husband for not running for the hills when no one would've blamed him);

    5. Shortness of breath (I thought this was from the lung surgery so I ignored it), dizziness and headaches (so many headaches);

    6. I had an irresistible (and so annoying) urge to eat ice all the time (I haven't had a desire to chew ice since my very first iron iv treatment). This is called pica. (some folks eat dirt but I wasn't going there!); I actually made the decision on which fridge to buy based on the type of ice it produced!

    7. At the worst of it – my bones hurt and it was hard to stand up..putting my feet on the floor and standing up for the first time each morning was so excruciating for lack of a better word…I dreaded it. I could walk across the house and be so exhausted I had to sit down or go back to bed. Awfulness!

    I thought I was just “in my 40's” for a LONG time! I feel 1000x better now than I did one year ago.

    PS: My docs “think” this started as a result of blood given during my lung surgery of 2008.
