I currently working for a regional firm but recently have been approached by a mid-tier national (GT, McGladrey, BDO, etc) HR manager, saying they are looking for someone like me to come work for them. Had dinner interview with a manager, partner and a senior manager. They originally contacted me in couple of months ago and I told them I’m in middle of busy season and no way I’m ditching my current firm to go work for them. They said they were looking to hire someone right away. So that was that….or so I thought. I figured I wouldn’t hear back from them but now I heard back from the senior manager saying there’s another opening and they want me to come to their office for a tour and a catch up lunch. Now I am torn. When they originally contacted me, I was thinking the position is something they would need to fill for summer or what not, in fact I had told the HR manager that I wouldn’t be looking to leave until busy season is wrapped up. So after dinner, I figured it just wasn’t the right fit. Now they want me back for an office tour and I am tempted. Not that I have any sort of offer (nor would I ask for one since I haven’t really made up my mind).

I have 1.5 year experience and passed all my exam (applying for license shortly). I work in Texas and I was wondering what was the salary level? More importantly, what should I really think about when it comes to jumping ship? I do kind of want to stay through June since that’s when the busy season bonus gets paid out but if this is the right opportunity, I would jump. The tricky part is, how do I know this is the right transition? Should I wait and apply for Big4?

    1. What are your goals? (Go Big 4 eventually?; Partner; Top MBA; etc.)

    2. How much is the bonus at your current firm? Maybe you can negotiate a passing a CPA exam bonus form the Mid-Tier in lieu of foregoing your bonus at your current firm.

    3. From buddies of mine salary is around $56k for your level (second year staff), give or take a few hundred depending on rating. Big 4 seniors typically get salary bumps and bonuses once they hit Senior level.

Personally, I'd say get your feelers out to all kinds of firms. Big 4, Mid-Tier, etc. Like I've offered in the past to others, drop your email here, and I can take a look at your resume and see if it's a good fit for my Big 4 firm or not.

Having contacts is the easiest way to get your foot in the door in your situation. Applying via the website is for the birds 🙂

What helped me a lot was reading reviews from current/former employees on Glassdoor .com. Also, you can get an idea on their salary on that site as well. Good luck!

I'd at least explore it since it sounds like you at least have mild interest. See what they have to offer, practice your interview skills, and make new connections. If they blow you away, then go ahead and take it if it fits your goals. If not, I'm sure you're not the only person they are talking too and they wouldn't be hurt.

    You always explore opportunities!

My buddy at BDO in wa st was offered 55k as a staff accountant doing senior work with 3 years experience last fall, they did have him doing senior work, just no authority to hire a senior yet. He will get bumped to senior at his 1 year anniversary, and i believe that pay range is very low 60's for next year.

    REG- (1) 76
    FAR- (2) 64, (5)74, (7)83 (Over achiever!)
    AUD- (3) 70, (4) 75
    BEC- (6) 75

Hi, I am currently working as an AP Analyst and right now just waiting for my license number. I already mailed to CBA my Initial license payment yesterday. I wanted to work in public accounting, my biggest challenge right now is that my 7 years of experience in AP seems worthless since I don't have any GL or Audit Experience. I am willing to start from the bottom because i know i lack the experience. My question now is; is it okay to go to the firms office and drop my resume? It is a bit of challenge for me doing it online because once they filter the applications according to experience, I am automatically disqualified.

    Thank you.

I think that's probably your best short term option. Your best long term option is networking.
