I have a BBA in Business Management and I’m looking switch back into accounting. Prior to graduating in 2011, I was an accounting major but changed majors because of some personal issues. While an accounting major, I took Intermediate I, II & Management (Cost) Accounting. I received a C in all 3 of them.

After a few years of teaching, I have decided to go back into accounting. My question is should I take the prerequisites to enter into the the MS ACCY program (18 hours + 36 hours of MS ACCY = 54 hours) or should I simply get the Certificate of Accountancy (at most 39 hours as I have already taken 9 of these hours). My dilemma is the fact that the MS ACCY is only 15 hours more than the certificate, IF I re-take the 3 courses I have already taken for the certificate (I’ll HAVE to retake them if I want to have a shot of being accepted into the MS ACCY program as it’s competitive). I will also sit for the CPA exam after both of these options and I have a husband and 1 child, and I’m looking to expand my family within the next 3-4 years.

    So my question is,

If I opt for the Certificate option, should I retake Intermediate I, II & Cost Accounting? Do you use the information taught in these courses in real world accounting? OR should I simply opt for the Masters program, then sit for the CPA Exam?
