CHEAP Reg options for a student fresh out of school

    Hello all,

Some of you may have read my post from not too long ago asking about whether or not to take REG in the semester I graduate. Long story short, I finish undergrad in May, have a Big 4 internship over the summer, then start my master’s. Would like to knock out a section in May, and REG is the logical choice because I took grad BLaw (can’t say I remember THAT much from it, may all rush back to me though) last semester, and am currently enrolled in graduate tax (enjoying this class enough to make me STRONGLY consider eventually starting my own practice instead of typical corp accg career, so that part of it is definitely sticking more than BLaw).

ANYWAY, I was hoping to get you fine peoples’ opinion on a cheap combination of materials that will get the job done. I’m really on a tight budget, so I’m trying to stay under about $300, but lower would be much better. My firm will eventually cover Becker, but not until I sign a full time offer, and they dont reimburse…

The first option I was considering was Wiley’s package of the book, the test bank, and focus notes for about $150. I am also considering pairing this with the Ninja Notes, and already got the killer deal on the $1 flashcards!

The second option I was considering was the Wiley book only, and then adding in the Ninja 10 point combo. So basically instead of doing the package of Wiley book, Wiley test bank, Wiley cram notes, and then adding Ninja flashcards and Ninja notes, it would be Wiley book only, and then adding the 10 point combo with the Wiley bank, ninja notes, audio, blitz, and flash cards.

The other option… well I don’t really know of one! That’s why I’m here asking. Is there any other package, or some kind of combo of buying this book, that test bank, etc., that will be effective enough for about 2 months of studying (along with school and work in April, and then nothing but CPA studying in May) within my price range? Or am I crazy for trying to do it with just Wiley books and test bank and ninja notes and won’t find much better in my range?

    Thanks!

Looks like Gleim would be perfect for you. Their reg package is just under $300!

Personally I would just get the Wiley book and test bank. The focus notes you don't really need. Everything in those is covered in the book much better and if you study effectively, you won't even look at the focus notes.

Do you live in a state that will approve you to sit before you graduate?

If not, it will take up to 2 weeks after your graduation for your transcript to show you've received a degree, then you have to send it in to be approved to sit which can take from a few days to a few weeks, then after you've been approved you'd need to find an available appointment at prometric which can be a challenge at the end of a testing window. Not trying to be a downer but unless you live in one of the few states that will approve you before your degree is in hand the timing is going to be hard.

That said, Wiley is the cheapest.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

@berrygoose – thanks for the advice, I will be looking into that. I haven't heard anything on Gleim. Is it fine on its own? Or does it need to be supplemented with Wiley Test Bank, or Ninja Notes?

@Clarissa – Thanks for the input!

@mla1699 – Not being a downer at all! You're right to ask, as I've looked into that question myself! From what I understand, one from someone who talked to the FL (where I live) testing board, and they said its doable to, say, graduate in May and be scheduled for end of May. I also talked to a student directly who graduated in August and tested in August. He said the key is to get a transcript when grades post, a few days after graduation, rather than wait till you are actually awarded a degree. He said after that, everything with NASBA and the state only took about a week and a half.

Thank you for looking out though! Believe me, that was a big concern of mine! It would suck to buy $200-300 worth of material, study, and then not be able to take it until July (which would suck, cause its after my internship starts). Still sort of is a concern, but I feel better now that I've heard from two sources its doable.

I would say that the Wiley book, test bank, and Ninja combo is a good way to go.

Also, if you still have your tax textbook from college, it may be helpful.

I passed reg using only cpareviewforfree.com and Jeff's audio. I purchased additional review materials but didn't use them. Oh, I did purchase and use the sims from cpareviewforfree.com. I have been out of school for 8 years and work as an internal auditor.

    B - 11/14 83! DONE!!!!
    A - 8/13 90!
    R - 11/13 86!
    F - 4/14 78! Almost there...

@10key – thanks. I don't have a text book for this course, because he told us not to bother due to giving us very very extensive notes for each chapter.
