This may be a dumb question and I hope the obvious answer is the right answer but if I’m applying to new jobs, will they contact my current employer? I don’t want my current employer to know that I’m searching for new opportunities.

When you fill out the applications I believe you have the option to say no when they ask to contact current employer. I always make sure I let them know that I do not want my current employer contacted until I have received an offer. My current job when I got an offer I told them to wait till I had put in my notice. And then that Monday once I put in my notice I notified them that it was ok to contact my then current employer.

It's a position that I found through linked in and there is no place to specify if you want the employer contacted. Does that mean the default answer is that they won't contact your current employer?

General rule is that they won't without asking you first. Companies tend to follow this but it is not a law so they don't necessarily have to. They'd be more likely to ignore it if tgey know someone at tge company u r currently at but even if they do, they generally don't in my experience.
