My friend is working in another company and they’re doing a little study on their existing salary scale. She is a Senior Accountant and a licensed CPA. Before getting her licensed, she was an accountant and her salary was on BS degree scale. They don’t have a separate scale for Accountant or Senior Accountant.

Below is a class of their salary scale:

    BS

    BS + 18hrs

    Master’s Degree

    Master’s + 30 hours

    Doctor’s Degree

Providing no separate salary scale is created for an accountant position, to which salary scale above does having a CPA license fall into?

Anything worth doing is probably not easy, but the rewards are worth it. (unknown)

Personally I don't feel you can correlate a professional license on a scale like that because obviously a masters degree without a CPA is going to receive a lower salary than a masters degree with a CPA.

That said, if she MUST stick to those criteria, I'd find out what the salary ranges are for those particular salaries and look up a senior accountant CPA on the Robert half salary guide in that geographic area and see where there are similar salaries.

Teachers are grouped exactly like your list, so I wonder if this is a school board or a governmental agency. If so, then they should look at larger school districts to see what is comparable pay. If not, then they could add some categories:

    Bachelors w/150

    Bachelors w/150 + CPA

    Masters + CPA

    PhD + CPA

But if you do this, then you could potentially be adding the entire alphabet after the degree.

Thanks mla1169. @Kricket – you're right, it's a school district and this is a salary scale for teachers. There's a little chance, a new class will be created but more likely not. As you said, if they add another category, they could potentially be adding the entire alphabet.

I agree with Kricket as far as finding comparable pay. I am the CFO of a school and am not on any sort of salary scale. For upper level administrative (I'd assume accountant/senior accountant as well) it is based on experience/degrees/size of the district/school you're in instead of some type of step scale like teachers.

I don't know of any scale so I created my own. See which one you fit into.

CPA Batman : You do your best work at at night and in the shadows when everyone is off and out of the office.

CPA Superman : You use your strength and superhuman abilities especially for external auditing when an ordinary human will surely fold under theextreme pressure

CPA Green Lantern: You are that Super CPA when you need to be gathering your strength when necessary like during Tax season.

CPA Flash: You are that Hyper fast CPA that once you are on a roll on a project you are lightning fast and un stoppable.

CPA Wonderwoman : You are the CPA Princess Warrior with multiple superhuman abilities allowing you to accomplish many accounting tasks and projects.

Like others have said, it doesn't really fit the scale, but if I was tasked with finding a place for it on the scale I'd go with somewhere between BS+18 and Master's, since it's a BS+30 (at least in most states) to qualify for the CPA, but doesn't necessarily require Master's. So, more than BS+18, but possibly less than Master's. However, given that it has a certification with the BS with the 30 extra, I'd lean towards Master's as the best equivalence – same (or close) number of credit hours plus a beyond-Bachelor's recognition, though not in the form of a Master's.
