CPA licensing in a state you don't live in

    I just passed all 4 parts of the CPA exam, but have just moved to another state. When I applied for the CPA exam, I applied in Maryland but have now moved to Florida. Can I still get licensed in Maryland even though I don’t reside there? It looks like I would not meet the educational requirements of the state I am living in now as they require 6 hours of business law when I only have 3. I don’t intend to be a practicing CPA as I work in finance. Would Maryland deny my application for a license since I don’t currently reside there?

    I've checked the site for Maryland and there is nothing that states you must live in the state of Maryland to be licensed, but I will give a call just to be sure.

    Anyone else have any experience on this?

    Each state is different. Some states DO require residency to be licensed there, others do not.

    I don't know the rule for MD.

    But, yes, I know that the education requirements for FL are stricter than most. I want to move to FL. I don't know if, once I'm licensed, I'll be able to transfer there???

    I'll figure that out later. Can't get licensed anywhere until I pass these exams!

    Just to close the loop on this, I spoke with someone yesterday and at least in MD, you do not need to reside in the state to get licensed which is a big relief.

    I got some good advice as well, you should get licensed in the state that approval for to take the exam. Transferring your scores to another state is a big pain. It's much easier to transfer an existing license.

    That's actually pretty bad advice. If you meet the education requirements for the state that you are transferring to, then it is VERY easy and much cheaper to transfer scores. If they're both NASBA states, you can do it right through NASBA's website.

    I did it from a non-NASBA state to a NASBA state and it was still pretty easy. Just a matter of getting the correct forms filled out and sent to the correct people. It took about 5 business days total.

    It's only easier to transfer an existing license if you don't meet the education requirements and don't intend on fulfilling them.

    Please i am also worried about this, I plan on taking the exam in Maine because of it's less accounting requirement and hoping to transfer the scores to other state sometime.

    I don't have enough time to sit for extra accounting classes to meet the requirement of other states because i am so busy with my MBA program. I wouldn't mind meeting the educational requirement of which ever state i wanna transfer the scores to in the future, i just wanna be sure i can transfer it.

    Also any idea if the scores expires.And any other Pros and Cons

    Please i really need help here to avoid making a mistake and regretting later. Thanks
