   Now, that I'm getting closer to finishing up this exam.. my mind is filling quickly with questions. For example, do I demand a promotion, do I find a new job, do I take a job in public accounting for less money to get experience, etc.

   I noticed when looking for open positions, they say "CPA preferred". Are they going to pay more if I have my CPA? Are they serious about "cpa preferred"? It seems every job description says "cpa preferred". I wonder if it is just to get the best candidates to apply. Then, hire the best candidate without a CPA license to justify a lower salary. I could see them saying, "If you had your CPA license, then we would start you out at a higher salary..." Ya think? I guess my question is "What does "CPA preferred" really mean?" At my current job, sure a CPA is preferred, but it is definitely not needed. Wouldn't the company want to save money by NOT hiring a CPA?

   It could be that the company is potentially going public, or is looking for a credentialed person on their team to impress an investor, etc. Be cautious if the company seems shady, as the liability shifts to you if the books are really screwed up.

   mmm i just see "CPA Preferred" as a way target specific candidates. it seems the job doesn't require a CPA license (most don't, unless you're actually signing off on the financials), but they see desirable characteristics in someone who has a CPA license (knowledge of GAAP, dedicated to the profession and career, disciplined enough to pass the CPA exam, etc). it also builds credibility for the company if CPAs are involved in preparing/attesting to their financials.

   i think you're thinking too much when you start talking about this salary business... i think they already have an idea set as to how much they want to pay, CPA or not. and if you're going to offer someone the position at that rate, then it might as well be a CPA.
