    Hi,

I have masters in Engineering and have been working in the industry (engineering and now IT) for the past 20 yrs. For the past 10+ yrs, have been supporting Finance users with process related issues (I work as SAP Finance consultant). I want to prepare of CPA. I have been taking a few classes at the local community college (Macro and Micro economics, Accounting 1A). I went thru the prerequisites for CPA, and it’s not clear on how many of these courses need to be completed before I can start preparing for CPA. I didn’t understand the 24 semester units requirement. Can anyone explain me how many semester units the above 3 courses account for? Also, what other courses should I complete before venturing into CPA? Please advise.

    Thanks for all your help,

    VD

Did you look up your state requirements?

    CPA1Fresh,

I did check the State's requirement document and it wasn't very clear. I guess mine is a typical scenario, where someone with engineering background is trying to get in to Accounting.I want to get over the prereqs at the earliest, hence wanted to understand this better.

    Thanks,

    Hi,

I have my BS in Engineering and MBA-finance. You will need 7-8 Accounting classes (3 units each) and 24 semester units for business classes (pls check with your state board website)

I don't know how your state board works, but in Texas we were allowed to do an application of intent at any point in the process to allow the board to evaluate our education credits. At that point, once you know what you lack, they have a website that explains each course requirements and what universities offer approved courses.

They have a lot of faults when it comes to score reporting, but the TSBPA is awesome and helping you get information you need.

I had one class that was an issue so I just called and talked to the lady at the TSBPA that was assigned to my case. She walked me through it and we figured out that I qualified with the classes I had. Maybe you can just call and talk to someone?

Good luck. It's a long mental marathon (and not just the testing part either).

@letmakeitdone: in Texas we had to have 33 hours of UPPER level accounting. That was in addition to Finc and Managerial that we had to take as freshmen and sophmores. I ended up with 41 total hours of accounting!! That's insane. You guys only have to have 24 hours of Accounting??

My state board was very helpful in figuring this out. My degree is not in accounting but I too wanted to write the CPA exam. I sent them copies of my transcripts and they told me what else I needed (some of it I could figure out from the website, but for the last couple of credits I wanted to be absolutely sure I had enough credits in each category).

    lateralus ag,

I am in CA but transfered my credit to IL to get CPA certificate. I am also waiting 1 year exp under CPA in CA.

In CA, we only need 24-semester units in accounting subjects and 24-semester units in business-related subjects.

They counted my community accounting classes too..Intro Accting I,II…(for IL they gave 1.6 times credit for graduate level classes)

In addition to whatever Accy classes you take, I'd recommend MacroEcon and MicroEcon too. Take the intermediate classes if you can.

    Bec 4/11/11 91
    Aud 7/11/11 75
    Reg 8/31/11 80
    Far 5/24/11 86

    California Licensed CPA
    Illinois Registered CPA

Thank you all for your input. This is very helpful. I'll check with my State accounting board.
