I’m looking for reviews/comments on different CPA review courses that are eligible towards the 150 credit requirement.

I know CPAexcel has courses that you can take that are eligible to be counted towards the 150 credit requirements. I accessed the demo, and I really like how the course is set up basically like a college course- quizzes, homework (sort of), MCQ’s, discussions, etc. The only con I have about the course selection, is that the courses aren’t full CPA review courses, but rather courses that focus on a handful of topics that are on the CPA exam… (There are 3 courses that cover different FAR topics).

I also know that Rogers, i think, has courses for credit… but when i was briefly reviewing the courses it required to go through a bunch of application stuff… almost like i was applying for the college and the whole nine yards. I know for CPAexcel, it’s not a lengthy process to sign-up for these courses for credit.

    Anyway, thoughts?

Today, I became a cool kid.

    AUD - Passed
    REG - Passed
    BEC - Passed
    FAR - Passed

I think I read that Becker has a program with a place called Keller (?) and that students can earn graduate credits. I'm not 100% sure about this but it may have to do with what you're talking about.

Yes I used Keller (a division of DeVry university–if you feel okay calling it that) to get a few extra grad credits so I could hit my accounting credits and skip a masters program since I was close anyway. The courses are fairly expensive, but they basically use the Becker books as their materials and you go through it the same way you would if you were doing self-study except that you have to write short answers on a blog for each chapter–piece of cake. Well worth it if you're close to your credits and just need a few more and don't want to pay for an entire masters program.

    BEC 86 (08/30/11)
    FAR 84 (10/13/11)
    REG 88 (11/08/11)
    AUD 86 (11/29/11)

See Pee A – I was wondering how many college credits you recieved while in the review classes? I am looking into those same classes since I am almost at the 150 hour mark. Can you take the classes in person or just online and did you think that they were helpful in preparing you to pass the exam?

    Thanks

I am taking CPA Review courses at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. I live about 2 hours away from their main campus and everything is done online except for one initial info session and one final review class in person (or via computer, if you can't come). Basically we work through the entire Becker course and are required to do all lectures, homework, one discussion post per week, and a 10 question quiz. There is also one presentation (usually Power Point or something on a subject we are studying) and one short paper/essay to write. (That can be a pain to fit in, but I guess it helps them give you credit for the master-level class). The tuition includes all the Becker materials plus the Final Review materials. There are 3 classes worth 3 credits each – FAR, REG, and AUD/BEC.

I took the first FAR class in spring to get a feel for it all (and because I needed those 3 credits to meet the 150) and was thinking of doing the rest on my own. But when I compared the cost of just the Becker materials vs. taking the class for AUD/BEC (being that two exams are covered in one class), it was about the same cost either way to just buy the materials from Becker or take the class, so I took the class. It is nice to have a teacher and other classmates to ask questions of (in addition to this forum).

I am pretty sure anyone can take these classes through Lakeland (Kellet school) online. I just received my bachelor's from Lakeland and figure it is always good to get additional credits as long as you have to go through all this studying anyway. They have a pretty high pass rate, I guess, for their classes.

    Good luck with your decision!

    FAR - 92 (4/27/12)
    AUD - 96 (7/17/12)
    BEC - 92 (8/30/12)
    REG - 91 (11/12/12)

I am also looking into obtaining course credit. I am 6 short of my state requirement for upper-level accounting credits. However, I've already started Becker – (FAR self-study but just failed) and AUD (live classes, exam scheduled for January). Would I still qualify?

The Becker courses through Keller/Devry will count 9 units. 3 units for FAR, 2 units for the others. I did the online option.

It's costly though, really pricey. So you pay a little more for college credit – two birds with one stone. It's comparable in price to some of the other online classes you might take anyway. The only cheap, cheap option I've found is through community college.

It also keeps you on a rigid schedule – a whole section in 5-6 weeks — which is GREAT for those of you who are undisciplined (like me!).
