    Hello Ninjas,

    I have been a Cost Accountant CMA for the last seven years. This month I quit my job to move back to VA from NYC.

    When I’ve been chatting out loud to family freinds, and they’ve been pushing me into being a sole proprietor. The city im moving back to is a much better market for that type of work then Cost Accounting.

    I passed all of my CPA exams in 2013, but never went into public to get licensed. The great thing is that in VA, I can apply for my initial license since the rules are different about who needs to write for your work experience.

    Additionally, we know of a family friend who is looking to get out of her business as a sole proprietor. I’ve talked to her on the phone, everything sounds amazing but she’s not quite ready to train me and give me work, just because its out of season.

    I’m looking for someone who could chat and give me a little more advice? I had a phone call with this woman, but she’s not readily available because she’s going back to medical school. This is a huge career change for me and I there are things I’d prefer to bounce off of someone else 🙂

    @Kricket,

    I really don't want to work a 9-5 so to speak, so since I have a lot of tax experience, How will I introduce myself as a cpa and break into the market that I am currently in. I live in a rural area, there are two accounting firms Both firms have recently merged with other larger firms. How can I jump in as a new cpa ( after I pass of course).

    Over 20 years ago, my partner was working for a Big 4 in New Orleans until one day he said “I don't want to do this anymore.” He moved his wife and kids to the other end of the state, rented a building and hung out a shingle. He never looked back and never went hungry. There is plenty of work out there, especially in small rural areas, like the one I live in. There are only two accounting firms here too and we all stay swamped. The other firm has started turning away tax clients. We take as many as we can, but if things keep going like they are right now, then I won't have an empty office once we get moved into the new building. I'll have to hire someone just to keep up with the work. I haven't had a day off since I had surgery on May 8th. I don't have a clue how many billable hours I've put in just this weekend. A few weeks ago, I billed a new client for an entire years worth of Financial Statements, $16k and they didn't think twice about paying the bill. They wrote me a check right then. I busted my a$$ to get them done and get them right. The thing is that banks are requiring more and more financial information from small businesses. In order to keep their loans at a reasonable rate, they have to have a complete set of financials, regardless of the size of the business or the amount of the loan. Maybe this has become a problem in my area because we just had the largest bank get bought out by a much larger bank. I don't know. I know that I'm tired and I've got another case of bronchitis.

    So to answer your question, my suggestion would be to get the license and put an ad in the yellow pages. If you build it, they will come!

    Kricket,

    It is very encouraging to hear your story. I am a stay at home mom now and I am considering to go back to work next year. I would like to know that if eventually I want to start my own business(probably in tax and accounting area) shall I stick to seeking jobs in accounting firm? How may years of experiences are needed for a sole proprietor?

    I have passed all the exams, but I only have one year experience in a small company. And I am worry about the gap (three years) too.

    @cpatobe2013 – I don't have a clue how long you need to work for someone else before you go out on your own. I started working at the firm I now own half of when I got on the slow train through hell!

    @tncincy – The men are glad to share around here! I am the only female CPA in the Parish. The 3 males were just happy to see another license regardless of gender.

    @skynet – I don't know how to respond to that and keep my dignity. 😉 Part of me wants to go to work for you and part of me wants to offer you a job!

    Do you need an “audit” license for this? Or just a “general” license? I think this only applies to CA.

    @Kricket,

    I don't think I need additional experience other than audit, do you think it is appropriate to approach my neighboring accountants to gain audit experience?

    @Skynet – It was the hot wings!

    @monsterE – I charged them that for a compilation of their own information. It wasn't an audit. I'm not independent with respect to that client.

    @tomq04 – I'd advise you to stay away from hookers. Those can get you in a lot of trouble. 🙂

    Hey C'mon guys. I'm trying to tap a Niche market here by combining Hot and Sexy Accountants with Hot Wings and Cold Beer with Accounting and Tax Services of a CPA firm. It is going to be like the Hooters of the Accounting industry. Now who wouldn't want to work there or hired the firm for their services?
