    Hello All,

Quick survey question. I am about to be licensed in WA state and am researching the annual costs to mantaining my license. My employer (private industry) will cover annual AICPA dues and along with up to $200 in CPE’s.

Question: My understanding was that even in private industry most employers will cover the cost of CPE credits? Have you found this to be the case, especially in private industry? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It has been a interesting ride.

I did not get my CPA/CGMA for EGO. They pay or I move on. I normally negotiate that when I am hired. They can always choose not to pay and I can choose a better offer. If they don't pay it is like a slap in the face. An insult – period. Realize that if you did not have a CPA they would not have hired you and they now would love for your to let it lapse so you stay with your current company forever. Meanwhile, just look at the expense reports of execs eating out on the company dollar.

One must ask, is keeping up with current changes in FASB worth anything to the company? Or, are you a greater asset being outdated and uniformed?

In this industry, it's going to be a LONG road if you justify any expectations on exec expense reports.

    FAR - 87 2/18/14
    AUD - 84 4/2/14
    REG - 87 7/23/14
    BEC - 78 8/26/14

I'm finally an *official* CPA - TX

    Well

I am the only CPA at my company. Seeing a lot of that in Industry. Controller CPA – no. CFO? No he lost his. Assistant Controller – no same story lost as well.

I work on Advanced Excel, Advanced Access, VBA. Do what no one can and have options. But than I have been a CPA 24 years.

I would suggest if your company does not cover CPA related expenses talk to the recruiters. Other company's are willing.

It is a bit much to say CPA Preferred or somehow have it as a requirement for the job and then the company gets amnesia. If they don't reward or value you then I guess you don't value yourself.

When I got my CPA I was given a 5K raise on the spot. I don't work for free. And I did not pass the CPA for personal satisfaction. If a company does not value it then I have no problem interviewing with one that does. When I leave I lay it on the table. I would not have gotten this job without it, and now you don't support it? My continued education benefits the company not my personal life.

Harsh, but reality. As spoken as a past CPA chapter President.

There are many things you can negotiate before you accept a position.

    Three weeks vacation

All CPA expenses such State Society and AICPA Dues.

    CPE

And an amount for CPE say 3K per year?

And time off not vacation if you are in a seminar.

    PERIOD

Do it. Don't assume. But then I have done this for 24 years.

It might be easier in the future to try to negotiate an extra $500 to your starting salary. I would feel kind of petty complaining about a few hundred dollars, assuming I'm a well paid CPA, in private industry. In public accounting they get to jack up the fee they charge the client for your CPA license, so that is another story.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

Dietcpa- I wish I had your attitude! I like it! If I did, I probably would have been in a better position, but I'm such a chicken when it comes to negotiating with my employer. All I could do was ask them for reimbursement.

But, this is a very interesting thread. I always thought that it is standard for employer's to pay for your CPE, license, etc… I knew there were exceptions, but thought it would be far and few in-between. Looking at this thread, it appears I was mistaken.

I worked for a small local public accounting firm right out of college and if I would have stayed there, I knew that my boss would have been more than happy to pay for everything. Probably not the review course.

Approximately 4 years later, now working as a Controller in a private industry, my employer gave me an unspoken condition before hiring me that I will need to get my CPA. It was implied during my interviews. After getting my license, I spoke to my bosses and asked for a reimbursement of all my cost, including my full review course, exam cost, license cost, and all future CPE that I will need to do to maintain my license and they were again more than happy to reimburse me for it.

My company pays for all license fees and CPE credits for our Controller and CFO and will pay for them for me (accounting manager/assistant controller) once I'm done.

My private company paid for my Becker software, because they thought the Wiley books/test bank I bought is the cause for my first fail. They do not pay for test fees. I'm terrified that if this journey doesn't work out like I hope, that I'd have to reimburse them and/or they would let me go. I am the only employee that didn't come to them without a CPA designation already, so this is a new journey for all of us. Here's to hoping for only passes from now on!
