Creating LinkedIn for new job when I'm still currently employed. Good or bad?

My bosses all have linkedin profiles. They don’t know I’m looking for a new job. Would suddenly creating a profile raise suspicion and get me in trouble?

I wouldn't necessarily think so. As long as you don't plaster something about how you are looking for new opportunities you should be fine. It's not like it's a tool that is specifically meant for job seekers.

Don't specifically mention “Looking for new opportunities in Audit/Accounting/Tax”. That becomes very obvious if people from your work sees your profile. Your profile will be visible under “People you may know” category if for example, I and you were working for same company/firm. You will be shown under “People you may know” category.

I guess it could. That said this is accounting and most accountants have profiles – aka you should not have waited until now to make one to begin with. Generally at my last job once people started updating their profiles and connecting to a bunch of recruiters it became obvious. So if you are going to connect with anyone from your company, be sure to turn off your broadcasts (which let your network know everytime you update your profile or make a new connection).

I don't think it raises suspicion unless somehow you make it obvious you are looking for a job or you embellish your skills.

Everyone has LinkedIn accounts these days. Just don't do anything stupid like post “I'M LOOKING FOR A NEW JOB!” and you'll be fine. If anyone asks, and they won't, just say you felt you should have one to increase networking opportunities.
