So after the CPA and CMA, what is the next most highly regarded accounting certification? CIA?

Unless you're focused on auditing, specifically, Internal Audit, I would not say that the CIA is the next most valuable. In my opinion, the The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation has become the most respected and recognized investment credential in the world.

My understanding is the CFA is more of a finance-type designation. I would agree with you though that it probably carries more weight than a CIA.

I would say “weight” is job-specific.

To an internal audit department, they want a CIA … they might not care at all about the 3 years it took to get the CFA.

Bookkeepers ARE accountants; they would be crossing the line if they called themselves a CPA. I have had A/P clerks call themselves accountants–I'm not sure an A/P or A/R clerk (not demeaning their position) have the place to call themselves accountants.

Anyone else not think that sock puppets are just the lowest form of internet scum?!?

I think I can safely say that:

    1) You have to study to pass the CPA exam.

    2) Apparently, even on a CPA forum, no one can agree on what exactly an accountant is….

People have legitimate questions on this website?

I have to agree with musicamor…. CFA is probably more highly regarded because of how difficult it is to obtain.

I personally would just focus on the certifications that help your career path. (ie if your job is internal auditor pursue a CIA, etc.)
