Credit cards and defaults

I’m aiming for Big 4 Accounting and it seems that academically everything is lining up. I had an informal interview last week and am going to the actual offices of one of the firms in a few days. I know I can do the job, and I’m sure I can get them to feel the same way, my interview skills are not lacking. The thing is, due to some incredibly difficult economic hardships and some boneheaded decision making, I have defaulted on a couple of credit cards. I paid one off, yet I still have one hanging in the wings with a balance of almost 6 grand. I will pay it and get it out of default status within a year. Besides those I have nothing else negative on my credit. Shoot it to me straight guys, does this kill off any chance with a major firm or with any firm for that matter?

I am not sure if it will cause you the chance at employment. The first thing I would do is pull your own credit report and become familiar with everything on it. Second, if they happen to do a credit check, just be upfront and honest about what happened and that you're making every attempt to better your situation. Chances are if they bring it up, they're looking more for honesty.

    AUD - 92 (Becker+NINJA MCQ)
    FAR - 87 (Becker+NINJA MCQ)
    REG - 90 (Becker+NINJA MCQ and Audio)

I agree with hunter get a copy of your credit report which is free 🙂 3x a year and try to fix as much as you can on it. I'm not sure if firms run a credit bankground check on you or not. But I wouldn't say anything to them unless they bring it up or say anything regarding credit checks. If they do, say you have a plan in tact and will have the matter fixed by x time. Everyone has hiccups in life. It's how you fix them, learn and move forward that matters. They will appreciate your honestly. Good luck!
