I’ve seen quite a few posts from candidates concerned about working 50, 60 or more hours a week and trying to study too. I’ve been under the assumption that probably about 80% of the people here are working those types of long hours and its not keeping them from getting those study hours in.

    Was I mistaken?

I work about 45 hours…I drive about 10 hours (doesn't technically count but it adds to the length of time I'm away from home). I'm not in public accounting thus the reason for a shorter work week.

I'm also an auditor for the state. My work week is a consistent 40 hours. However we are coming up on another deadline so the past couple week's have been a little longer. But never over 50 hours…. Ever. =)

I work 25 hours a week. I don't work in accounting and I am still trying to find a job in accounting! I just graduated 2 months ago.

I work about 40 hours a week…38.8 during those weeks where my body doesn't want to leave the bed or I've been up all night studying. Very flexible and plenty of vacation and holidays off to STUDY!

I'm still a student but the only class I'm taking is Becker. It meets twice a week. I'm also working as a tax preparer, right now I'm at about 25-30 hours a week but once tax season is over, I'll be laid off and studying for the CPA exam will be my full-time job until next tax season. Hoping to pass before then.

As a follow up question, if you are only working 35-45 hours per week, don't you think you could further your career by working more? Especially in the first few years of your career, you should be putting in more effort than 8-5pm. This is, of course, only if you want to give yourself more opportunities to get ahead and be successful. You'll only get out what you are willing to put in.

@Mini-I think that depends on where you work and who you work for. My boss is all about work/life balance. She is a CPA but she doesn't like to see us work past our normal working hours and she says if she catches us working on the weekend, she'd fire our ARESES! Still, I try to take on new projects when I have down time just to speed up the day. I also mentioned to her that I wanted to come in earlier to do more and she said that working more hours didn't necessarily mean that I was more productive. Her motto is get it done in the eight hours you are alloted. And I don't get paid by the hour. I love her! lol

Actually, it kind of sounds like she is holding you back. The more projects you work on, the more experience you get. Work/life balance is great, but it is good to get yourself established first.

I think it depends on your goals. My goal in getting my CPA license is to be able to make a decent amount of $ during tax season then work minimal hours the rest of the year. At 41 I'm not looking to go Big 4 or start climbing the corporate ladder, I just want to contribute enough to the household to get out of debt, put some away for retirement, and have some play money left over. My husband is a college professor so he has a month off over the Christmas holidays and a couple of months in the summer – I want to be able to spend time with him and my kid, not be stuck in an office 40-60 hours a week all year long. But, everyone's priorities are different. If I were 20-25 and single, sure I'd be looking for that next rung but I'm just not in that position, nor do I desire to be.

@grace – Yeah, it definitely depends on your priorities and what stage of life you are in. Sounds like you know what you want. That's awesome.
