Denied license after passing exam

Has anyone heard of anyone being denied and actual license after passing the exam? I sent application off it feels like a month ago and I have not heard anything. I had a few minor run ins with the law back in my college days, but no felony or anything. I sent the same information to be reviewed prior to sitting. Just wondering if anyone has heard of people getting denied after passing exam….

What state are you in and have you looked at their licensing procedures? For example in MA, licenses are only granted at board meetings, and the application has to be received completed 10 business days before the board meeting. If you were in MA and had just missed a cutoff its entirely possible to take 2+ months to receive a license. If you post what state you applied in, someone with experience in that state might be more helpful to you.

Have you tried calling your state board about your application?

Also, just to clarify, you passed all 4 parts of the CPA exam, completed all other requirements, mailed it off, and have not heard anything since?

If so, definitely give your state board a call and ask for a status update.

Pretty unlikely. I just think some states suck. Jomarie has waited 8 weeks I think. WA processed it in one business day. Louisiana only issues when they meet I guess. IL takes a couple of weeks. It will just vary on your state- if you're worried about it call them but more than likely you're just in a slow one.

I agree with Sandra ~ there is probably a lot of variation with each state. The rep from the Oregon Board of Accountancy said that once I finish my final exam, I may be looking at a possible 6 month wait. Since I have worked primarily in the private sector, a special board reviews my “type” of application. They only meet 3 times a year. I am thinking this keeps the entire process in line with the snail mail concept 🙁

Yes it depends on the state. I'm still waiting and I mailed in my experience back in the middle of August. NYS told me they are 8 weeks behind. I'm on week 7. 🙁

Started sitting in May 2002, on and off. But since 2008 I've been nonstop and my scores are....
    AUD - 39, 48, 56, 65, 68, 73, 76!!! (Finally passed in Oct 2011!!!) Becker, NINJA, & Wiley
    REG - 75 (Lost Credit) 72, 68, 73, 75 (Passed again in Aug 2011) Becker, NINJA, & Wiley
    FAR - 65, 68, 75 (Lost Credit) 68, 73, 73, 80 (Passed again in May 2012) Roger, NINJA, & Wiley
    BEC - 65, 68, 71, 72, 72, 71, 76 (Lost Credit)- 70, 76!!!! I AM DONE!!! - Roger, NINJA, & Wiley
After 10 long years of studying, I AM DONE!!!! Finally a Licensed CPA in the State of New York!!

Ditto in California…it just takes awhile…most people here expect 3 months for a turnaround/confirmation you're approved for a license then another 2 months before you actually get your wall certificate in some cases.

“For example in MA, licenses are only granted at board meetings, and the application has to be received completed 10 business days before the board meeting.”

My co-worker mailed her application to the MA state board this past July and got her license at the end of July.

Funny thing is there was no state board meeting in July…. So I'm pretty sure that's not true even though I read that also.

    @ DETERMINATION

3 months for confirmation and another two months to get the license!?!?!?! I just sent in my application to the CBA (CA) 3 weeks ago. I was starting to get worried and came here to the forums for some answers. Looks like I'm worrying way too early in the process as I have many more months of waiting ahead of me. I probably don't have to call in to check on the status for a few more months.

Question: Does the CBA actually mail you all the notifications they say they're going to mail you? Like the Application Receipt postcard, 30 day status letter, 60 day status letter? I guess I'm worrying because I haven't received anything yet.

    Thanks everyone!

Well after putting in all the hard work to pass the exam I would worry too after not receiving anything. There is nothing wrong with getting an update. I've explained similar situations to my tax clients that they can contact the IRS when ever they are having anxiety attacks about their refunds. I give them the website and the phone number just to relieve and ease their minds. So ease your mind put in a call and see what the status is…..then breathe

Congrats on passing….really wish I was in your shoes. :-))

@dtomasello it must depend on timing! Here at MD, I know one person who sent in their application in Jan and got their official license in the same month. Meanwhile, I submitted my application in late March and it's been 5 months and no word yet if I've been rejected or approved. I'm calling again next Monday to see what's going on. My application is in CPA licensing limbo. 🙁

    CPA license in progress....

@ImaCPA168 – I mailed in my license application, all complete on Feb. 26th and my license number showed up *online* on May 15. About a week or so later I got some letter from the state with my number, then after that the wall certificate, then a couple weeks later, the wallet license.

But check online because that will be first. But I'd say 6 weeks at the very earliest after sending in your application.

I don't think the CBA sent quite as many letters as they say. One of the letters they sent during the process was actually delayed because they didn't put postage on it!! I kept that envelope.

@mbh: I'm also in GA and got my license a few months back. Did you get an email saying “we have received your application and its under review” or something like that? Did you apply online or via mail? I applied online but you still have to mail I'm transcripts. I called them about a month after submitting the application and they basically said “oops, we forgot to attach your transcripts to your application.” After that it took about another week before it was approved and sent to the state board that issued me the license.
