Different study techniques for REG (vs. FAR)?

Just wanted to see if it is normal to have a different approach for different parts of the exam. FWIW, I am using Becker. For FAR, I did not watch one video. I read the chapter, took notes, did an initial round of the MCQ and then the next day I went through and redid all the ones I missed. For final review I just drilled MCQ over and over.

I tried this technique with REG and realized around R4 that it was just not cutting it. So I have now started to go through all the videos and type notes as Pete and Tim lecture. (This really sucks because I now have two sets of notes on each chapter which = a lot of time wasted). I do feel that the videos are helpful to me in seeing the big picture and for focusing on what Becker thinks is important (of course it’s all a crapshoot anyway).

Has anyone else gone through this? I am super annoyed because I felt like one of the hardest parts about studying for FAR was just figuring out HOW to study. I hoped to just replicate the same method with REG but now I feel like I am reinventing the wheel. Please tell me I am not the only one.

Ninja notes are helping me streamline my notes more. I started out with Wiley and had way too many notes(that I knew I would not be interested in again) so I got the ninja notes and mcq's and they are helping me stay focused on each topic without being overwhelmed. I need to do the questions first then go back and read (sometimes). But I have notes on the questions I get wrong…..hope this helps.

Thanks, good to know I am not alone. I am also taking a lot of notes on the ones I get wrong. I remember feeling overwhelmed in FAR but everything did come together about two weeks out from the exam. Hopefully it works the same way this time.

I am on hour 5 of my Becker video marathon…

What parts have you finished? I think I will do Audit after REG (assuming I pass the first round). The I will take BEC at the end of February. I really want to take a break from studying in December.

exams? or writing? If exams I have taken reg and far and failed both miserably…since those fails I have allowed everything and everybody become more important than studying (not anymore)….new approach, and no videos for me.

Writing – I have done individual and partnerships. Doing corporate shortly.

I am using the same technique I used for AUD however the process is going much slower for me this time so I might have to make any changes. I watch the Becker videos (highlighting and all 🙂 ) then attempt the MCQs. During the MCQs, I take notes of the summarized answers that the question provides for all the questions I miss. I know it is a painful process but it somehow helps me remember and even “discover” details I had missed from my video session.

I complete all the HW MCQs and then if I did really bad, I either watch the video again or read those paragraphs/ chapters that are not clear to me.Every 2 – 3 chapters I complete some sessions of progress tests.I also bought the Ninja Audio because I can listen to it when I am not in front of my computer.

Good luck to all of you studying!

I didn't watch a single video or read a single chapter of anything while studying FAR. (I had of course taken Intermediate I and II in school.) All I did to pass FAR was pound MCQs for hours at a time for six or ten weeks or so. When I missed a question I would read the explanation, take notes, maybe tape them to my wall for review later, and then re-do the MCQs I missed.

I don't think I can do it that way for REG. FAR was so technical and learnable but reg feels different. I'm a tax associate at a midsized firm and even that isn't really helping that much. I'm very familiar with taxes now obviously but there's so much BS in reg: ridiculously specific questions about obscure credits or deductions for example. I'm not sure how I'll memorize it all for my test…

I know! I never thought I would say this but FAR was easier to study for than REG!

Both require understanding of key concept.

REG has many things you need to memorize compare to FAR

IMO, FAR score “curve” more than REG. I expect to score between 70-79 and end up with 80. I expected to score 60-69 and end up 84…

    REG - 80 (02/13/2015) Roger + Ninja Flash Card + Ninja MCQ + Becker's Note
FAR - 84 (05/29/2015) Roger + Ninja MCQ + Some Wiley book questions
BEC - 77 (08/27/2015) Roger + Ninja MCQ + Half Wiley book questions
AUD - 87 (08/28/2015) Roger + Ninja MCQ + Half Wiley book questions
