Do any of your friends or neighbors constantly keep asking you if you passed?

I have this neighbor that lives on the floor above me at my apartment building. She knew I majored in Accounting in college. She’s a former CPA that let her license lapse. I occasionally run into her about 2-3 times a month in the hallway or the elevator. Every time she sees me, she ALWAYS says, “Hi!! So, did you take the CPA exam yet?” I refuse to tell people anything until I passed everything. It’s no one’s business to know that I’ve taken this test so many times already and failed multiple times and am still working at it. I just tell her that I’m still reviewing and will take it when I feel I’m ready. I tell her that exact same thing every time, but she’s still insistent and keeps on asking me if I took the test. She even asks my parents as well when she sees them, but my parents are the same way. They don’t want to tell anyone I failed because it’s not something that we’re proud to say and frankly, it’s no one’s business. But she still keeps on asking. Now, I understand if they ask once in a blue moon, but she literally asks me every times she sees me and my parents. It’s the first thing she asks when she sees us. It’s annoying and it’s putting pressure on me.

Does this happen to anyone here as well? What do you do about it?

Oh, people know I am an accountant. But hardly anyone knows I'm studying for the CPA. I recently moved from Dallas to Houston. I didn't know very many people when I got to Houston so I figured it was the best time to study without distractions. My co workers know, family, and a couple of close friends. They don't ever bother me with questions though. I'm hoping I get good results for AUD next week so I can tell everyone else LOL

That's funny. Because I never told anyone I planned on taking the test. It was a secret decision. But people I know think that majoring in Accounting = taking the CPA exam.

She's probably just trying to make conversation and has good intentions. She also probably wishes you the best.

I only told a handful of people, but then as this process went on for so long, more and more people found out I am studying, taking exams, and for a while, failing exams. I'm pretty open with people. They know that I've failed several attempts, and they know that I've passed. I've gotten a lot of support and respect for sticking with it to the end. When someone asked me repeatedly, I would just smile and say “still studying! I'll be done one day!” and change the subject.

As far as our failures, I believe we worry about them much more than other people do. Most people aren't against you, they are with you and want you to succeed. For the few that aren't supportive, then they aren't worth the energy to worry about. A quote I like:

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but they really great ones make you feel that you too, can become great.” – Mark Twain

Good luck to you with REG! My last section as well.

    FAR - 79 (2x)
    AUD - 81 (expired), 77!
    REG - 74! omg (3x) 87!!!!!!! I'm done! OMG!
    BEC - 81 (4x)

Yeah, that's true…it really doesn't matter how many times you've taken the exam as long as you pass it eventually. And you really should be proud of the fact that you have persevered through all the obstacles and have maintained your motivation to pass. I know that at least on some CPA firm applications it does ask you how many times you've taken the exam and what scores you received, etc., but I don't see why you couldn't just say you only took it 1 time, ya know? As long as you have your license number from your state board, I don't see how they could ever know you took it more than that.

Personally, if a firm asked me that question, I would think twice before accepting a job there anyway. Some of us just take the long way around. Life happens. I wouldn't want it to be rubbed in my face.

I actually thought about my future children. Would I want to tell them I gave up and quit? I don't want to have any regrets so I continue onward. And besides, I need to find a new job after 😉

She may have good intentions, but she's one of those people who are “need to know it all”. My other co-workers have seen me since I've started this journey, also have seen their father (my boss), sister, and husband go through this journey from start to finish. So they know when to ask and when not to ask. I've been working with them for over 10 years now, so they know me pretty well.

I swear my grandpa asks me every day I see him lol.

“Did you hear back about that test yet?”

“No….. not for probably 3 more weeks at least.”

    Next day:

“So have you heard anything about your test?”

“No….. not for probably 3 more weeks at least….”

Yes, I get asked this all the time. It is a long process depending on how much time you give yourself for each section to study and of course how many times it takes you to pass a section. It gets annoying, but I know they mean well. I do regret ever saying anything to anybody. I have finally come to the conclusion that (and I have told people this) I will not say anything else about the exam until I have completely finished with the exam. It makes it easier on me since I don't want to say “no, I didn't pass again.” It makes me feel really dumb not to have passed and then to have to let someone else know that I didn't pass…Only someone that really is going through this process understands. Best of luck to all!

it's hard to not tell people that you're taking the cpa exam because they ask you what you're doing, you tell them you work at a cpa firm, then they ask if you're a cpa, then you have to say no but i'm studying for the cpa exam. i wish i could keep it quiet until i'm all done but it seems impossible to. all of my friends and family are constantly asking about it whenever i see them. i saw some old college friends last night and they asked if i was a cpa yet and i had to say no but im working on it. it weights heavily on my mind that i'm not a cpa yet. this journey is a rough one.
