Do you get paid for an internship?

I was just curious if typically internships are paid or not after passing the CPA exam. So far I passed REG, AUD, & BEC and have FAR scheduled for November. I’m worried because I was a biology major and I have ZERO accounting experience. Thankfully I have an internship lined up thru an friend in a small firm, but I want to knock out my last exam beforehand. I was just wondering what salary range should I expect when the time comes to start looking. Thanks in advance

    AUD: 74, 67, 76!
    BEC: 70, 75!
    FAR: 76!
    REG: 67, 73, 79!

Generally all accounting internships are paid. In my area it is anywhere from $10- $18 per hour. Good Luck!

Yes, you shouldn't make less than 15/hr with 3 sections passed.

    FAR - 71, 68, 74, (8/31/14) 78 ✔
    REG - 67, 71, 71, (10/18/14) 78 ✔
    BEC - (11/29/14) 86 ✔
    AUD - 73, (4/4/15) 86 ✔

I can't believe this is over! 2 years and 3 months..

Internships right out of school in Birmingham, AL are going for $18-25/hr. I am unaware of any unpaid internships in the area. I'm sure there are different ranges in different locations, but I'd imagine the vast majority of them are paid.

Thanks guys for your quick responses. I live in Los Angeles so hopefully $18-25 is the same here. I know I could live off that for a year lol

$15/hour? I interned with a regional firm and made $21/hour (plus time and a half for OT). This was not in a major market either. You should do just fine.

Edit: This was with my bachelors degree not yet finished, much less having any CPA sections passed…

We had an unpaid intern this summer. She was here 2 days a week. I think that she could earn credits for the internship, but she was going to have to pay extra tuition. I worked with her the most. I tried to give her projects that would really help her learn and look great on her resume. At the end we also helped her with her resume and gave her good advice. Oh and we thanked her excessively. And took her to lunch a few times. It was a great experience! I'm hoping we'll keep it as an option going forward. In fact I wouldn't mind having one around all the time! Our other departments have multiple interns each summer and a few have even been hired on. I think a lot of them get their hopes up and so when they don't it seems like a let down. But seriously for them to be hired on here, it's kind of like the stars have to align perfectly. They have to be wonderful, which most are, AND we have to have an opening (and that is the problem).

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.

Big4 is $25/hour + 1.5x for OT, this is people who are generally still in school. [interns are the best treated people in the firm, followed by partners]

My Big 4 internship was $25/hour plus 1.5x for OT. We did the math once when we were working until midnight – as an intern I was making more than the senior manager on the team.

Spokane seemed to pay $14-18/hour (which included OT when applicable).

    REG- (1) 76
    FAR- (2) 64, (5)74, (7)83 (Over achiever!)
    AUD- (3) 70, (4) 75
    BEC- (6) 75

My Big 4 was 25/hr or so plus overtime. Made more per check than I make now as an associate per check

    Bec-76 (7/14)
    Aud-81 (8/14)
    Reg-82 (7/15)
    Far- 82 (10/15)

Moral of the story, don't do your CPA while working in Big 4 Public Accounting.
