Does CPA trump a degree

I have held an B.S. degree since 1996 and finished the classes I needed to write the CPA exam in July 2010. From 2010-2012 I worked on passing the CPA exam and got my final passing score in February 2012 and licensed in April 2012.

I resigned from my last accounting job and am looking for another one – and received this in the mail today:

“”This is to inform you that you were not selected for the position of Accountant with the Accounting Department…” We are sorry to inform you that you were not selected for this position because you lacked the minimum requirement of a B.S. in Accounting.””

    Frustrating!

You don't want to work there anyway if they rubber stamp something like that.

    AUD - 79
    BEC - 80
    FAR - 76
    REG - 92

I had a story similar to yours in that I received a BS in Marketing and Management in 1990. I went back to school to complete the requirements to sit for the CPA exam and finished that in May 2010. Something told me to ask how many classes I was lacking to get the BS in accounting and turned out I only needed two classes. Needless to say I went back for one more semester and graduated with that accounting degree. I only needed an english and a global business class both of which I was able to complete online. I feel it was definitely worth it, especially since I am still struggling to pass the exams.

Maybe you should considering calling the accounting department at your college and see what classes would be reauired to get the degree.

There are millions of accounting degree graduates, and only hundreds of thousands of CPAs…

Yesh. Sorry to hear, how annoying. You don't want to deal with a company that's so petty like that.

I have a science degree and an accounting degree. I was in advisory consulting, and (unknowingly) scheduled at clients that focused on biotech, chemicals, medical products. I wonder which piece of my background management touted to the clients before I was placed…

    Couldn't pass again!

So today they re-advertised the position as “…& Construction has an immediate opening for an Accountant/Administrative Assistant. Responsibilities include accounts payable, reconciling bank statements and general administrative duties, including answering incoming calls, handling mail, greeting visitors, etc. Strong computer skills required; familarity with Great Plains software a plus.”

Good thing I didn't get this position because I would have been VERY UNHAPPY having to be the receptionist too.
