It’s not clear in the job descriptions every time I see a listing for a State or federal auditor, accounting position. It always says that you need a 4 year degree in accounting OR a non related 4 year degree and X credits in accounting OR a CPA.
From what I understand, in government GS levels, the CPA does nothing for you other than substitute the accounting credits needed to start at a certain level.
If you do not get a CPA in government, are you limited in your advancement/promotion later on?
I’m wondering because government is a real option for me and if it gives me zero benefit in addition to my accounting credits and 4 year degree, then why am I wasting my time taking classes and studying for the exam for another year?
If I’m positive (or receive a job offer) that I want to go into government for the long haul, (i.e. rank up for 20 years and get out, i.e. be a lifer) then is a CPA recommended?
The only agency I have seen it mentioned specifically is the IRS but not all positions. Can someone clarify this for me? who works in government?
