    Hi Ninjas,

I recently landed a job with the county. I was wondering how helpful is the CPA when working with them? I guess I’m trying to find motivation because I haven’t passed a test (took 2 so far), I’m unhappy, and my motivation for going through with this process is just to make my parents, family and friends happy. I don’t think I’m doing it for me. I’d appreciate any input guys.

    Thanks

Hey – if you are not doing it for yourself then just hang up and pursue life which is much better without studying for the CPA.

Just let your family & friends know once & for all and they will respect your decision.

But remember one thing, CPA will take you places, where without one you will always be questioned as to why you have not passed the exam. If you that is, change jobs or go back into private after 5 years or may be even 10 years.

So think carefully, before giving it up. County job is the ideal place to study for the CPA, you will have plenty of downtime, and you could easily pass it.

I totally thought this post was going to be about going into county jail.

    BEC - 92
    FAR - 92
    AUD - 99

I would say do it, but it depends on your career aspirations. As my ex boss said, do it so that way no one can deny you for anything later. We don't know 100% what we want to do in life, a worker who has thorough knowledge, great team player could be the PERFECT manager of a dept but get passed over because they don't have specific credentials. Here's the thing, you never know if the reason why they're denying you for a job is true, so much is subjective but when they point out you don't have a CPA, you can't argue with that. It may not even be a mangement position, could be for higher pay, etc

I know a woman who went into county accounting. She did it for 2.5 years. But she had her CPA and has had incredible jobs since. She will be making 150K next year. If this makes you feel better, she failed FAR. Twice. I think she failed another section once as well.

You never know where you might want to go. I, for example, will never use my CPA, but people want to know I'm capable of getting it, so I'm getting it.

I've been out of school for 9 years and when I first went into public accounting I took 3/4 parts and failed and I decided I didn't want to do it. I planned to get out of public accounting after 2 years and knew I could have the option if I ever changed my mind. Now 9 years into my career, I can tell you I wish I would've done it back then. I was pretty much passed up for my bosses job, primarily because I'm not licensed. Now I work under a new boss who is super nice, but it is so frustrating having to teach him how to do his job. That should be me! Also, when I looked outside my company, most jobs that appealed to me preferred the CPA license. I'm doing it now, but I have wondered where I'd be today if I'd done it then. Also now I have 2 kids, which makes studying REALLY difficult! Good luck with whatever you decide!

    FAR - 7/13 - 72, 11/13- 74, 2/14- 82!!! Best score ever (for me)!!!
BEC - 1/14 - 75!!! Perfect score! First Pass! YAY!!!
    AUD - 8/14 - 80!!!
    REG - 5/14 - 72, 10/14 - 66, 1/15 - 78 - DONE FOREVER!!!
I did 5 of the UNA and CPAExcel classes to earn units.
