Does this drive anyone else crazy?

There are plenty of people posting this here and on the NASBA Facebook page…

    “I passed my last section… I’m finally a CPA!”

I know they are excited and I can’t wait to be that person, but don’t they know that they’re not automatically a CPA just because they’ve passed all 4 parts of the exam? It makes me wonder if they missed some critical information in their REG study materials. You cannot call yourself a CPA until you have a state license.

Sorry to be so negative… I guess I’m just a little stressed about REG in a few weeks. But it does annoy me that people who are smart enough to pass all 4 parts haven’t figured that one out yet :0

@Mikey – what are we? 5 year olds calling people names? Grow up!

I'm not trying to be mean – I'm just stating that some people are setting themselves up for trouble if they are calling themselves a CPA when they are not. I would not be saying I'm a CPA on the NASBA Facebook page of all places if I'm not yet licensed. I just don't understand how people who are smart enough to pass the exam are dumb enough or brave enough to do something like that. In my opinion, they are already jeopardizing their license before they even get it.

I get what you're saying in principal, but I'm sure if NASBA or the AICPA was going to crack the whip on it you would have heard as much by now. That said I never would say I was a CPA without license in hand, I even corrected family and friends who said “you did it! You're a CPA now!” and told them I was not a CPA until they could look up my license # on the state website.

How can you jeopardize your license if you say you're a CPA before you actually have the license? As long as you're not performing any work for the public or as long as nobody is relying on your accounting experience, what does is matter? Does a Facebook post that says “I Passed my last part, I'm a CPA!” really get you in trouble? <<— I actually don't know the answer to this, it just seems ridiculous that you could get in trouble for doing this =P

Jenuono if you claim to be a CPA before actually getting the license you can be ineligable to be licensed. Paraphrased if you do or say anything that would lead a reasonable person to believe you are a CPA, then you could be in trouble. I'm guessing they let the Facebook slide but sure wouldn't risk my license on that guess!

mIa – interesting. I guess I always assumed the rules weren't as technical, but I agree, better safe than sorry!

To be honest I was shocked that someone here got a letter from their state because they put CPA candidate on their LinkedIn profile. I've seen that on more resumes and profiles than I can count! Best advice is never use those 3 letters in any context until the state agrees!

I think there is a HUGE difference in writing “CPA!!!” on your Facebook page and writing XXX, CPA on your resume, etc.

I don't think any regulatory body will pursue action of any sort for someone using social media to express their joy in passing the exam unless the person intentionally misleads people into thinking he/she is capable of passing off as a CPA.

I have no problem with someone passing the exam and being happy – but I guess we are all a little anal about one thing or another.
