I thought that this would be an interesting topic to discuss. What is your Dream job and where do you want to eventually end up at the end of your career? Big 4? Private? Tax? Audit?

I’m just starting out in the beginning of my career and don’t really have an end in mind yet. I think it would be interesting to get others prospective on the topic.

Having spent my entire career in public accounting, my goal was to always make Partner. However, if the truth be told, I don't LOVE accounting nor public accounting. What I do love, is playing with my young daughter and playing with my dog; however, THAT doesn't pay the bills. So, back to the public accounting gig I guess. Our Firm is only 30+ staff, so I have the ability to touch just about everything work related that comes thru the door if I so desire.

My dream is to count the beach chairs in Hawaii, but that probably doesn't pay too well. I guess I'll stick with industry and maybe be a Controller someday. I used up a lot of my ambition on the CPA exam so I need time to decompress before I jump into a more ambitious career goal.

Back when I worked in Big 4, we had a client who owned such business in the adult industry.

We always picked a newly hired staff auditor, and their job was to lock themselves in a conference room with a stack of client's adult themed magazines, and go through every single page to count the number of pages with advertisements (as part of our substantive testing related to advertising revenue). Needless to say, plenty of volunteers for that role among the first year staff.

    Ha!

Funny as it sounds, it makes sense from an audit design perspective.

I'm with Gatorbates..I would love a position with one of the local sports franchises in Phoenix. This conversation came up over Thanksgiving. Would you take the same $ that you make now after passing the CPA exam for a position that you have dreamed about? I think that my wife would kill me if I did that.

I've been an accountant for 12 years now. My goal is to pass all 4 parts by early spring 2015. I have never worked in public. The thought of having to keep track of and bill so many hours a year just isn't my cup of tea. If my current employer doesn't pony up the dough and promote me when I am finished I'll be a free agent looking for the biggest paycheck. I've been with my current employer for 9.5 years. They know that the writing is on the wall.

A position that lets me live the life that I want for me and my family is what will work best.

Rather than “end” I'll point to some areas I'd like to try out as I build up my career.

So far, I've worked in: Big 4 audit, corporate internal audit, corporate treasury (currently here).

Where I'd like to gain some experience in the future: FP&A, corporate accounting, corporate development, logistics/operations… it may be a stretch, but also brand mgmt/marketing/business strategy.

Dannng. I thought I would be the only one to mention CFO of a professional baseball team.

CFO of the Detroit Tigers will be my final destination.

My “Dream” job would be CFO of a reputable company. However, my realistic job that I feel I have a legitimate shot at obtaining one day would be a director of finance for a corporation.
