   Hey,

   I'm starting a temp (to permanent job) at a small (20 professionals) CPA firm in NYC in 2 weeks, and I have no idea what the typical dress code of a CPA firm is.

   Do I need to suit up every day? I only have 2 suits! Or is business casual good enough?

   Any other advice you can offer, that will help me get a permanent offer after tax season would be greatly appreciated!

   Dress code varies per company. I would assume if you will work directly with clients, then professional attire is needed; however, you should ask the employer or temp agency (if applicable) what the dress code is.

   I went from a casual (jeans and sneakers) dress code to a professional one. If they allow, buy a few sports jackets and slacks. You can mix and match and don't need to blow your budget. just make sure you know which colors go with which :), and I'm assuming you are a guy lol

   Definitely try to find out specifically what their dress code policy is. Like Herbie, I just went from a casual environment to a traditional environment. They accept both full suits and blazers/sports coats with a tie. I bought two of each. Full suits for when I visit our clients, and blazers when I'm at the office. Blazers are nice because they're more versatile and can be mixed and matched, as previously said. There still might be some holiday deals going on. I bought mine two weeks ago at Men's Warehouse when they had a buy-one-get-one-free deal going on.

   my experience as an associate with b4 in new york. could be firm-specific, but prob a decent starting point at least.

   NICE business casual is the usual for younger people, as in a nice button down and nice slacks.... so not the polo and khakis side of "business casual." young people will wear suits on occasion (weather, changing it up, meetings, being around clients, etc.). ties are uncommon.

   older people (director, md, partners) wear suits (no tie) most of the time, and of course would wear ties when seeing clients, etc.

   so i can go in in a suit w/ no tie and not be overdressed, but would be underdressed if i was wearing a polo shirt.

   as others have said, it's always best to ask. but a suit (w/ tie either worn or in pocket if you can tie it well, quickly) would prepare you for anything on day 1.

   ALSO regarding formalwear, the most important thing (in my opinion) is for it to be well-fitting. it really won't matter that you got your suits at TJ Maxx or a department-store clearance rack if you take it to a tailor to get it fitted to you. but there's nothing more pathetic than a poorly-fitting suit or coat (shoutout to ron paul... yuck)
