Duplicate credits at 2 colleges- 150 credits for CPA

    Hi everyone,

so I have a quick question,

I am planning to be licensed in the New Jersey sate. I obtained my Associate degree from my community college with 63 credits.

60 out of 63 credits from there were transferred to Rutgers. And while I am at Rutgers, I had to take some classes such as Principle of Management, Principle of Marketing, Business Law I again to graduate from Rutgers even though I already took them at my community college to graduate from there also.

So the fact that those duplicate classes help me to obtain my Associate degree and my Bachelor’s degree, do those credits credits count toward my 150 credits?

Also, I am taking 18 credits at Rutgers and 6 credits from my old community college which means I am taking classes at 2 colleges at the same time. Am I allowed to do that?

Does anyone have experience with either of these situations? please help! I would really appreciate any inputs !

    Thank you!

My guess, having no actual experience is:

1st question: No, for example, ACCT 100 “Financial Accounting I” and ACCT 82B “Financial Accounting I” will be considered the same thing. Unless the descriptions are different enough, I would imagine they won't both be counted.

2nd question: Yes, pretty sure you could attend 10 universities, if you pass the class, it shouldn't matter when. “Hey you passed those 6 units while you were taking 18 units over there…” not likely. Passed class, is a passed class.

Thank you so much for you reply.

so even though Rutgers accepts my 60 credits that showed on Rutgers transcript and consider them as general education. I still lose those credits when I send the two transcripts to the state board?

This is so stressful! I think it's even more stressful than the 8 classes that I am taking right now lol

Hmmmm, you know, you never know.

Are you just trying to fulfill the general 150 with those duplicate classes? Could work. Lets wait for someone smarter to this thread 😉

yes! I just need to get my 150 to sit for the CPA exam without hassle since I don't have 2 finance classes and to start to work full time for EY. I am taking 24 credits this semester thinking I will have 150 after this semester but this duplicate credit issue comes up. I planned my whole summer out to study and take the exam but this may screw everything up. Sad story! 🙁

I'm pretty sure they would count toward your general credit requirement but not toward the specific accounting credit requirement. So say the accounting credit requirement is 24, but you have duplicate accounting credits you'd still be short there.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

Thanks everyone for giving me hope! 🙂

I would definitely ask if they don't count those credits since I have my Associtate degree. Luckily I think those 3 classes are the only duplicate ones, so I should be good for the accounting requirement.

I emailed the guy at NASBA but he takes forever to reply. I'll let you all know when he gets back to me. Hope for the best!

@HeartsMimiCPA: I am from Rutgers New Brunswick too! Go Knights!!! 🙂 hope you had a great experience wih AIS when you were here ( you know what I mean lol )
