I am currently studying for FAR. I have 2 young children at home and my mother was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. After 2 months in the hospital she was released to come home a week ago. Because she is not able to drive and is having some side effects from the chemo she relies on me alot to help her out. I had a schedule planned for my mornings – wake up at 5 am and shower, walk with my mom around walmart at 5:30 (as this is the only place open this early), 6 – 6:45 study, 6:45 finish getting ready for work and get my son ready for school, 7:20 out the door. Last week I didn’t get up until 5:30 and after I got home from walking with my mom at 6:15 I would fall back asleep on the couch until 6:45. So I didn’t get any studying done in the morning. I know the only way I am going to pass is if I put the time in to study, but it has been very hard. So I was wondering what your morning schedule like or what gets you up and moving in the morning. I would especially like to hear from mothers with young children as to how they get thier 20 hours of study time in a week. Thank you.

Wow. You are an amazing and dedicated person. All my heart and strength goes to you passing this exam.

I have been on the ELL plan for a while, and though I struggle with it sometimes, it is effective.

I wake up at 5 or 5:15 and am studying by 5:30 until 7. There are definitely at least one day a week where I end up falling asleep and wake up late. I definitely feel less accomplished on those days.

I never studied early. Its a great idea, just wasn't for me.

I studied at lunch. I studied in the evening after I did homework (work f/t, 2 kids and was finishing my masters), I did most of my studying on the weekends.

My tip for you: get the audio lectures. Listen during your commute. If you are allowed a radio at your desk (I was) listen at work (you're bound to absorb SOMETHING even if its not getting your full attention), listen while you are doing housework, and listen at bedtime when you can't keep your eyes open but aren't completely asleep yet.

I'm so sorry your mom is ill, thats a level of complexity that I am fortunate not to have experienced.

What an amazing person you are, to be doing all of this!

I would also suggest the audio. Maybe you can listen to it while you are walking in the mornings (unless your mom enjoys your conversation, one bud in?).

I have a very hard time getting up as well, but I have no real excuse for it other than finding the bed a much better place to be. Usually I'll wake up an hour before my alarm goes off, and without realizing what I do, I'll reset it for later. I can't stop myself! I'm trying to get up a little bit earlier each day, to ease myself into it.

I think you just need to not sit down after you're already awake. I know it's hard and that the couch is so very comfortable looking, but the moment you sit down, you'll be asleep!

I wish you the best of luck with your studying and your mom is in my thoughts!

Thank your for your thoughts and prayers for my mother. I think I will just have to go straight to my desk once I get home in the morning instead of stopping at the couch. I do study on my lunch hour and a few nights a week after work. I just need to get my butt out of bed! Thank you guys for all the advice.

The ELL plan really works for people with families and it has been working for me. What I noticed helped me a lot was making it routine. I tried to make sure that no matter how hard it was I always woke up at the same time, in my case 4:50AM. I studied until 6 or until one of my kids woke up. At work I study as soon as I feel things slowed down a little. Then at nights I study 8 to 11. I really make it a priority to stick to the schedule. After two weeks you wont even notice that your getting 5 to 6 hours of sleep a night. I actually kind of like the extra time. It makes me think of the possible things I can do with the time once I'm done with the exam. I guess its a motivator!

    FAR - Bad Fail '11, Fail '12, Fail '13, PASS It's a miracle!
    AUD - Fail, PASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    BEC - PASS!!!!!!!!
REG - PASS!!!!!!!! And I'm done!
