Excel problem

So I’m starting in public accounting (audit) in September. It’s been a week since I passed my last exam. Here’s the problem I’m having. I BARELY know how to use Excel!!! I know this is necessary for work. In school I didn’t have exposure to it in every class. And in the classes I did I always got by with asking for help or working in groups. Now I feel it’s coming back to haunt me lol. I checked my city library and the neighboring cities library none have classes available in the summer. I also suck at using WORD. Not sure how applicable that will be in my job. Should I take a computer class at community college? Should I start googling/youtubing random stuff? Should I buy an excel software course (saw some on groupon)? What do you guys suggest? The last thing I want to do is embarrass myself or get fired because I don’t know how to use these programs.

I haven't used it, but lynda.com seems to be highly rated, and it will give you some structure for learning.

If there are specific things you want to learn, I have always used the Microsoft help and found it extremely useful… most of the time. Google is always the backup.

Thanks guys. The librarian did tell me about lynda.com. It's about 6-9 hour video course I will definitely check it out. If anyone has any other websites to share please do! 🙂

I started at my public firm in October with only a computer apps course taken my sophomore year of college. My colleagues helped me out a lot with difference excel tips and tricks, but if you have no understanding of excel I would take a basic course.

I work for a small firm. We just had two interns start last week. I asked them how well they think they are with excel. They both thought they were pretty good. Less than a week later, the one intern turns to me and points out that they thought they were pretty good with excel up until now. It's funny he thought he was good with excel to begin with since he couldn't even know how to insert a row.

Don't be too hard on yourself about not really knowing much. If you want to familiarize yourself with it though, I would suggest playing around with it a bunch for fun and just looking up basic formulas and shortcuts.

You will pick it up pretty quickly, but certainly find some online tools, learn about the basic formulas.

Mike Smart's books are the best. He provides a link to download exercise files. He has both expert and beginner's versions for 2013.

Most people I know who are truly competent in Excel got that way simply by playing around in it. Create a project, and figure out how to do it (could be as simple as a spreadsheet that tracks your personal budget). Then figure out a way to make it simpler/better/different. Whenever you run into something you don't know how to do, Google it. Learning how to find answers will be the #1 key to being an expert someday.

I agree with Lilla. Pretty much everything I know about Excel is self-taught from playing around with it and using the help function. Now, I am the office's Excel expert.
