I worked for several years at a CPA firm, however, that CPA died as I was in the exam process.

Am I out of luck for all of the experience gained there? I can’t seem to find a solid answer.

The answer is it depends. Some states don't require thar your direct supervisor sign off so if there's another CPA who is willing to sign off, maybe a colleague, you might be ok. If the deceased was the only person with a license and you didn't associate with other CPA's you may be out of luck. Should call your state board to pose the question, really.

Yeah, it was just one licensed CPA in the office. I'm going to call the state CPA society today, they were closed yesterday afternoon.

I'm fairly certain some states allow candidates to certify their own work under certain circumstances. All state MAY have such allowances.

Like mla said, you have to call your state board.

Can you transfer your application to a state that will allow a inactive license or a non-CPA verifier? Here in Colorado we are allowed to have anyone that is an active CPA verify our experience as long as that person is willing to attest that they have direct knowledge and periodic review of the applicant's work experience. I was able to have my external auditors verify work experience. Perhaps that would be an option?
