    Becker Question –

    oh. my. God.

2nd time going through it feels worse than the first time, although i scored 7% better than the first time (50% to a 57%)

I keep trying to find a pattern on how to answer the questions but each one tests you in a different way/different information.

I understood leases alot better the 2nd time through, but bonds seems like i hit a wall and moving like a turtle in grasping this information.

any input is appreciated, good input of course. sighs.

I definitely wish I was one of those people who got all 4 exams done in 4 months, but unfortunately LIFE (being a newlywed, stress, adjusting to newlywed life and cpa exam study life, as well as starting a job with a Big4 which I am very happy about) got in the way, just happy that I am passing period!!

Bonds are really rough for me too, let alone convertibles and warrants. JEs and Amortization table visual in my head is the only thing that saves me.

You in full on review mode? I'm taking my exam the day before you (8/8)!

Bobcat87, Yes, i try to visualize the amortization table also but sometimes get confused by the way the question is worded and the different facts they give you (add or subtract accrued interest, etc) before starting my calculations.

Plus when they give you different dates for issuance, interest, between interest issuance, etc. it makes it that much more confusing. Yes i am on full review mode but F2,3, and 5 has taken longer than expected, i may have to push back my exam date. 🙁 Btw, how do you compare REG to FAR? REG is next for me. :/

Anyone who has taken the exam can shed some light on this topic?! did you fully understand it going into the exam and passed? or no? suggestions?

There really isn't a pattern with bonds because there are so many ways they can be tested. Just make sure you know them inside and out. Once it “clicks” in your mind, you will never forget them. Just keep plugging along and you'll get it.

For me, I found that once I was comfortable enough to explain the whole process to someone else that I was much more confident in my ability to answer any kind of question they could ask. If you just identify patterns, it would be your luck that on the actual exam they either A) ask the questions in a different way than what you're used to seeing, or B) they throw some sort of unforeseen kink in the problem that you aren't used to dealing with (possibly distracting info to confuse you).

Can you explain, using your own words, the reason that bonds are sold at a discount or a premium? Can you explain the amortization of the discount/premium in plain English, as well as how it affects interest expense and the carrying amount? Why do we discount at the market rate of interest rather than the stated rate, and what happens if you accidentally discount at the stated rate?

I think being able to answer those questions for yourself might be helpful.
