I’ve been on a big team for a while and there’s a handful of those people who love to talk about how full their plate is, how late they worked, purposely send out emails at midnight so everyone can see how late they were online, etc. If you’re one of those people, just stop. To these people, work is also their social life. So many times I walk past these people as they’re screwing around on Facebook and they sit and socialize at least a third of the day instead of working. The other 20-somethings might be impressed by seeing you logged in at midnight, but those of us who are older, have families, and a life outside of work, are not. We see you as in your first “grown-up” job and maybe two or three years removed from college believing this is what the real world is like. We also see you as ignorant as you stay at work late for the sake of saying you work long hours. And most importantly we see you as part of the problem with public accounting as you drink and serve other young associates the Kool Aid that “it’s what it takes to make partner”. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
