i took the FAR exam in Jan and failed it with a score of 69%. I’m very depressed; sacrificed sleep, social life..everything!!! I’ve been studying day and night for this since the last week of October, 2013. I’ve took a couple of progress every two chapters and did the practice exams. I scored in 50s in the second practice exam. Except for the first chapter H.W., my scores were lesser than 80%. What should I do now?

I’m working now, so can someone maybe tell me how many hrs. I should put into studying for this damn exam.

Well, that's a bummer….but honestly scoring below 80% should have given you a hint that you are not ready yet! I scored 80% on most topics in WTB and then I took the same MCQs AGAIN despite the fact that I already did well.

And even with that much practice I passed my exams with low 80s….that should give you an idea how much to study…. there isn't really the right number of hours or days… it's until you “get it” and score 80% and above at least in the most important topics – judging by the number of MCQs in your study materials.

    FAR: 81 (May 2013)
    BEC: 81 (July 2013)
    REG: 83 (August 2013)
    AUD: 82 (November 2013)
    California CPA since 1/30/14

Tough Kitty, I see that you have passed all four parts. What was your study process??

Not sure how true it is, but I have heard getting <75% on practice exams and homework doesn't necessarily mean you aren't ready. The Becker questions are tougher than the exam. I passed REG and it sounds like I wasn't too much different than you.

Just keep studying and doing questions until you are getting it more. Good luck!

Study Kitty? 😉 that's a good one. I think “Tough Monk” decided to ignore me…..

Anyway, to answer your question, I used only Roger CPA Review + WTB. I didn't use Ninja materials although I LOVE this forum but I prefer and know how to take my own notes, which I found more useful because I am taking them myself and I know what I need to concentrate on….

The way I did it, I'd spend the first 2-3 weeks watching lectures, reading textbook, taking notes (some by hand and with color coding, but most in Excel), and I tried to do MCQ in WTB at least once. Then I'd review my notes and practice MCQ again, and again, and again until I got 80+% and then I'd practice them again, to make sure I got them right for the right reasons.

Of course that is the rough explanation of what I did. I tried to change my strategy for each exam and I just made it work for me. You gotta learn your study skills, make a plan, and stick to it.

Not sure how good Becker materials are…. I had a chance to use the textbooks and they were pretty good although they didn't go into much detail so maybe reading Wiley textbooks at least for some topics would help.

I was aiming for high 80s/low 90s and look at my scores! This exam is hard. You can't aim for a 75!
