Failed REG again – I want to give up!

This will be my 3rd time studying for REG (and last part!) The first time I ran out of time and pretty much guessed and/or left some of the answers in the Sims blank. I knew I failed that one after leaving the test center. After I got my score breakdown, I first focused on my weaker areas, did a ton of MCQs, and rewrote my flashcards. I then studied the material I scored comparable in. It seems like this method definitely improved my score. Both times, I used Becker materials and Wiley MCQs and made my own flashcards.

The second time I took the exam, I kept watching the clock so that I wouldn’t run out of time again, which made me feel like I was rushing through the exam questions. I was just so disappointed in myself after finding out I failed the second time. Is there anything I should do differently with my study strategy? My exam is rescheduled in 5 weeks. This time I purchased the Ninja MCQs. I plan on going through the Becker Final Review, rewriting my flashcards, and doing a ton of MCQs and Sims. I feel like I learn the best when I do the questions. Hopefully the Sims in the Ninja review will help me out.

    1st time: Score 60

    Ethics Legal Responsibilities – weaker

    Business Law – stronger

    Fed Tax Processes – stronger

Taxation on Property Transactions – weaker

    Taxation on Individuals – comparable

    Taxation on Entities – weaker

    MCQs – weaker

    Sims – weaker

    2nd time: Score 69

    Ethics Legal Responsibilities – comparable

    Business Law – stronger

    Fed Tax Processes – comparable

Taxation on Property Transactions – comparable

    Taxation on Individuals – comparable

    Taxation on Entities – weaker

    MCQs – comparable

    Sims – weaker

I know how you feel. I too narrowly failed REG with scores of 47, 60, and 70. I am just going to do everything I did previously and add Ninja MCQ. Also, I wasted a lot of time during my previous attempt. Had I been more focused then, perhaps I would have passed. But anyways, I would just advise to press on. Your score indicates that you're almost there, just do everything you already did and add something extra, and you will get over the hump.

And zxiao, wow, look at those scores! I'm so jealous.

    CoolPunk Amy –

You will not pass till you get a comparable in simulations, they are woorth 40% of your score and they will never pass you with a weaker in it, Period.

Happened it to me 2 times, and when i got a comparable in simulations i got a 78 in regulation and i was still weaker in other areas, but just the fact that that i had comparable in simulations i passed.

Dont add any more stuff to your work study, you are fine, sometimes it comes down to luck as to what simulations you get and in which area of tax you get….

    Hope & Pray….

You can't give up, you have ONE left. I've failed REG twice, but I passed on the third attempt a month ago. The most important to focus on in REG is definitely Tax because it appears in both MC and simulations. That's what helped me on the third attempt.

Try to leave as much time as you can for SIMs. I left 2hr and I used every minute of it. I dont know my score yet though.

I think you should also review accrual and cash basis accounting. I think that's essential for performing well on SIMs.

    FAR 85
    AUD 83
    BEC 76
    REG 90

I lost two parts because of REG. Hunker down, and get through it. >Don't be me!!<

I found the best thing I ever did was do ALL the MCQs for a particular topic that you can get your hands on one time. Then go through, for every question, and write out, in your own words, what the underlying concept is, what the right answer is and why it is right, and why the other three answers are wrong. Then do rapid fire MCQs until you can't do any more.

For my last go around, I didn't even look at the practice SIMs. My actual exam SIMs were impossible all six times I took it, and did not even remotely resemble the SIMs I had been practicing. I spent wayyyy too much time trying to study the SIMs for each of my five fails, and the AL on exam day can really help you grab a few points you'd otherwise lose. But ultimately, I think the key is to put yourself in a position to be “stronger” in as many of the MCQ areas as possible so a “weaker” in SIMS doesn't ruin you.

    GOOD LUCK!

This is exactly why i am starting out on REG and so far it hasnt been fun.

You have completed 3 exams you know 70% of the material for REG and you want to give up now. How can you even think about that?

    REG-77
BEC -Waiting on score May 5th
    AUD - May 30
FAR - Q3 depending on if i pass above two in Q2

    Don't give up!

I failed REG for the third time and this is my first test.

REG – 65,66 and I just received my results last week – 73!

The time people give up is when they are so close to succeeding. It will be worth it.

The first and second time I went through my review material through a University. The third time I sat down and did multiple choice questions from Gleim and I purchases the 10 point package. The practice questions was what helped improved my score significantly. I am adding flashcards and more practice questions and taking the exam again next month.

    You can do this!

    Reg - 65, 66, 73, 76
    FAR - 11/25/14 ???

@coolpunkamy – This is what may happen if you give up.

    You quit the CPA exams

You go back to school and major in Virology.

    You graduate with honors.

You go work for the Umbrella Corporation

You and a team is working on a cure for cancer using a genetically modified virus dubbed “T-Virus”

One of your team mate is clumsy and break a vial containing the virus.

The virus gets out and causes an outbreak

The virus kills nearly all the population and turns them into “Mutated Killer Zombies”

    Moral of the story

    Study for the CPA exams

Don't work for the Umbrella Corporation and create Mutated Killer Zombies

Thank you so much everyone for your responses! I think I just needed some positive words of encouragement. I'm trying to do this while I'm 7 months pregnant so it's been super hard to focus but I'm going to try my best!!!

    @coolpunkamy,

I feel you even though I have not failed a single test yet I am pretty much sure I failed my REG which I took yesterday. I did not have time to cover all the material in the Wiley Book and I did not even do any practice SIMS. So I barely knew anything at all when asked about taxation so I had to guess a lot of questions. I also was making stuff up for the SIMS so I am pretty sure I failed it.

    FAR - 89
    AUD - 84
    BEC - 84
    REG - 49, 86
    ETHICS - 96........ DONE!!!

@gorbuha Your scores are amazing!!! I know how you feel leaving an exam feeling defeated. I had no idea REG would be the hardest part for me. At least you have some time before your credits expire! Good luck!!!

Get Rogers cram – about 11 hours or so of lecture, the book lays out the info nicely. Watch the lectures, study the book, use MCQ's for your weak areas, pass.

    B -
    A - passed
    R - passed
    F - passed
