FAR and holidays

I still have to take FAR for a retake. I scored 63 and knew I wasn’t really prepared when I took it. I didn’t give myself enough time. I had the retake scheduled for November but have not had as much time as I had hoped. In short, my special needs son is having some issues and I have been super busy at work so I moved my FAR retake to Jan. 14th.

How do you manage studying through the holidays? Do you find that all of the celebrations are a distraction, as to where you need to put extra measures in place for study time? Looking for input from anyone that’s got a solid holiday study plan or from those that were studying through the Christmas holidays last year.

I hoped to be done by the end of this year but life’s just not working out that way.

    Thanks in advance.

PS – Ahh, nuts. I hit “submit post” before I could categorize it and this is the 1st time I’ve done that. Could a moderator please categorize this or tell me how I can? Thanks. Sorry about that.

moved to FAR review for you.

Your post reminds me of going to weight watchers in November and discussing how to lose weight over the holidays (or at least not gain).

My leader always said “remember, these are holiDAYS not holiWEEKS”. Meaning Thanksgiving day and Christmas are only two days out of 38.Maybe a company party or school party one or two more days.

Do all your shopping online (remember black Friday deals are by and large available online too and the prices are better Cyber Monday!) , buy store made cookies instead of baking for days (its ok, you'll be forgiven next year!) and maybe this year only put out 20 pieces of the Christmas village instead of 92. LOL! Make your goal to have it behind you for Valentine's day and celebrate with your son!

I think it would depend on how much time you have left. Personally, my time runs out in April. I knew I had to retake FAR and also take REG. That gives me three testing windows in order to pass the two tests. I retook FAR 10/18. I studied more, but still didn't feel ready although a pass is a possibility. But, I'm also taking REG for the first time on black Friday. I figure with only three windows left, I'm shooting to take both of them in each window until I pass. I don't want to get so bogged down in one exam that I only have one shot for taking the last one.

I can certainly appreciate your situation. I'm taking this exam after working in industry for several years. I recently changed to a job that “strongly encourages” that I am a CPA, so here I am. I finished my undergrad degree in 2004 and the masters in 2008, this has been really tough! I have a six year son old from a previous marriage and am currently married with two step-daughters (11 and 14 ugh!). The kicker is that my husband is in the Army and leaves in two weeks to deploy overseas for a year (I'm also keeping custody of the girls). Finding study time is incredibly difficult, and I tend to find other things to occupy my time than study. So, I have made the commitment to study every available moment while still taking care of the family.

My best advice is to go ahead and take at least one test in every window, just so you don't get into a have to pass or lose one situation. And who knows, you may get surprised by an unexpected pass…that would be a great holiday present!

@ mla- thanks and you're right, there are a lot of areas over the holidays where I can cut down on doing various things. I also like the idea of moving my goal to Valentine's Day.

@ Texan – I have until 9-30-15 and this is my last section.
