Starting to study for FAR for Ocotber 5 exam. Suggestions on hard / heavily tested areas to spend more time on than others. Using Becker to study for this. How did it go for anyone who recently took this exam?
Same here... studying for 10/14 exam date. I am also using becker. After reading a few posts regarding this beast, you should know the big picture concepts of all topics. Don't pay too much attention on specific details (unless you have the time to, I guess).
Good luck Dewey.
I would tell you which topics are hit hard on the exam since I took it 3 times but Jeff will kick my a$ since this will be TMI...
@dewey42000
I used Becker as well. As long as you feel very comfortable with the MC in Becker you should be good imo.
I am having a hard time staying motivated studying FAR...this material is tough and definitely no fun! How does everyone keep at it??? I am still on a "high" from finding out I passed REG but I need to move on!!!!! :)
@dewey42000
I am using Becker as well for FAR. I have been told to spend extra time on F8 and F9 (Governmental and not-for-profit) because it is tested heavily and most of us do not touch it as part of our day jobs. Do others agree?
FAR - (10/08/10)
AUD - 99 (5/28/10)
REG - 90 (1/13/10)
BEC - 80 (3/08/10)
Richard-
I definitely spent a lot of time on those and am happy that I did. NFP was not bad but it took me a while to feel some amount of comfort level with Governmental.
Congrats on your scores! Which section was the hardest for you?
Richard....I agree. It is actually a pretty easy section and a good way to get a few easy points.
Becker does a good job with gov't. and NFP. I've never taken a class nor worked in it and that is the only section I consistently score "stronger" on.
@Anagha
REG was definitely the hardest for me. I struggled with the material and especially the motivation to study. Prometrics made some money off me on that section - I rescheduled 2-3 times out of fear.
FAR - (10/08/10)
AUD - 99 (5/28/10)
REG - 90 (1/13/10)
BEC - 80 (3/08/10)
Is 27 days enought to study for far. I am on Becker Chapter 3 right now and feeling like this is a TON of material to know.
dewey42000 in my opinion 27 days is not enough to study FAR. On the other hand you may be a quicker learner and have a very solid background in accounting and things may work out differently for you. Weigh your options and see what works out for you.
@dewey42000
Is 27 days enough? I think that depends completely on the individual. I did not start studying for any of the three sections I have passed until 2-3 weeks before the exam. I used Becker and I made sure I went through the MCQ at least twice and could score >90% on those questions. I do not have the discipline to study this stuff for the suggested 6-8 weeks - I like to cram. Good luck.
FAR - (10/08/10)
AUD - 99 (5/28/10)
REG - 90 (1/13/10)
BEC - 80 (3/08/10)
Hey guys...For FAR should we solely use becker materials or we need to refer back to our accounting text books from university?
Please kind leave suggestions, thanks
I took FAR for the first time in March (they extended the window due to the storms that happened back then i think) and got a 64. i barely gave myself enough time to get through the material and did ZERO review. =( I used Gleim's book and questions only.
I'm taking it again 10/2 and am just going through everything again using the same stuff. Do you guys think I should try to get some sort of final review material?
Another question: how on earth can I get PV/FV/annuities/bonds/notes etc. through my head? I have to think SO hard every time I come across any related question and I know there's a more efficient way. Also, every time I think I understand, I come across a question with different wording and I get thrown off again.
I am currently studying for FAR, and starting chapter 4 today. From my experience with the CPA exam, Becker wasn't enough for me to pass. I took a few sections of the exam over and over and over. I decided I had to do something different. I ended up purchasing the Final Review from Becker ( REG and AUD), as well as renting the 2010-2011 Wiley CPA review book from the Library. I realized that I cannot rely soley on Becker to pass these. I did as many practice exams, simulations, and MC as I could. It came to be true when I got my REG score back. I blew it out of the ball park.
I too went through the homework several times, but it just wasn't enough. By exercising a variety of questions from a variety of sources, I was well prepared for REG and AUD (more so than I did the first two times of taking them). I have learned my lesson when it comes to studying. Study hard... be miserable... and you will pass. FAR is difficult... but we all can do it!! GOOO GET EM!
BEC - 85
REG - 87
AUD - Waiting
FAR - End of October.
So I've noticed a lot of post indicating that there is more emphasis on gov & non-profit? How much would you say was on the exam? The CSO's in Gleim indicate only 20%, but I'm seeing it was more...
Last time I took FAR, my percentage of govt & NFP was pretty large, but then I've talked to people who get 2-3 questions on it.
I'm retaking on 10/8 and I hope I get some more "common" questions, like inventory, bonds depreciation. Last time I took it, I seemed to get all questions on very detailed, not so touched on topics : ( I just want to pass this time.
I hate FAR.
haha me too, anything specifically??
No, I think I hate it all equally, especially after going over it for a third time.
Today, I'm really hating revenue recognition.
FU, F2!
I very much agree CPAWannaBe. I struggled so much with that chapter. I am not sure how I am going to handle it. I did the lecture, took notes, and completed the homework. The homework did not go to well. SO, I decided to move on and not waste my time until I went through all the lectures. I heard once you get through the lectures, Chapter two makes more sense. (I am hoping this is true). We aren't the only ones who don't get along wtih F2!! I took AUD 4 times (waiting on score), not because i didn't understand the material.. but because I HATE auditing with a passion. So, I can totally understand how you feel right now.
F2 sux!! this whole thing sux! i heard F3 was better after studying F2 but i'm doing equally as bad...at least i'm consistent...FML!
Guys...you gotta stop being so negative. Think about it, somewhere in the world (India and Haiti) people are REALLY struggling. The CPA is a game of questions a right of passage if you will. Learn how to answer these questions, and move on...
I meant Pakistan (flooding)...
Thank goodness for a good advanced accounting course in graduate school, or else i would be totally lost!!
