Yes, Becker makes more sense after yeager. no wonder they say becker is a review course whereas yeager is a teaching course. I couldn't wait to restudy the gov and nfp acctg so I skipped over some modules. I know gov accounting is one of my weakest. i feel like if i master gov and npf i will be fine.

I just got through taking BEC this morning! ewwwwwwww! Glad that's over, praying for PASS! I'm moving on to FAR. I want to take it the end of November, but those dates aren't available within my area, nevertheless, I will start studying this week!
How is everyone else doing? What advice can you give me on FAR?

Hey All,
Just took FAR AGAIN on Saturday. I got a 74 last time, hoping to get lucky this time. I'm pretty sure that my MC packets went Med-Diff, Diff, Med-Diff. So I guess I did well on the first one and not so much on the second. Simulations were not hard in material but I had to rush to get throught them because there was a lot so I didnt get to check my work. Overall this test seemed harder to me than my 74 test, and hopefully it was, seems like it is better score wise to get the harder material. Now its a waiting game and i'm starting to study for BEC now to take in about a month. I have to get through FAR BEC and AUD by mid Jan before I lose my REG. I just seem to be making a carrear out of studying for FAR, I hope I never have to study it again.

Quick question.
So I'm taking FAR October 17th. I've been doing a good deal of studying and feel pretty decent on Becker Chapters 1-7. On the simulated exams (100 MC questions from all chapters) I have been pulling mid 80s and even a few close to or over 90. I've taken probably 15 of these tests.
Those scores include the governmental and not for profit chapters, but I feel like Becker's questions for this part of the exam aren't that bad. I feel like I really have no idea what is going on in these chapters but I can somehow either remember the question or they're not that hard. My question is, where is good place to get good effective notes for these topics? Are Jeff's notes easily understandable for Gov't NFP?

Hi All. Can someone help me please regarding my NTS? I have ordered both AUD and REG NTS last week and have not received them yet. Called NASBA many times, and they mentioned my NTS have been sent out yesterday, today and they would take another 3-5 business days to email me. I want to seat for AUD Oct 30, so I want to reserve a seat. Does anyone know who should I reach at NASBA to reserve a seat since my section ID has been generated already? I dont want to run out of time..

lori - you should be fine, it takes a couple days for them to process everything through... I don't think there is any other way to schedule until you get your section id, you can check on prometric.com to see if there are still seats in your state/specific city at a convenient time for you. best of luck!

Not sure if you received your NTS or not but it usually helps to e-mail them regarding your "missing" NTS.
For what ever reason my NTS for REG and FAR never showed up in my in box, leaving me to e-mail NASBA regarding the "missing" NTS, I've found the turn around to be pretty quick.
Seems like the majority of people in this thread are taking FAR towards the end of October, I'm on the 20th.

I was able to schedule FAR on the last day of November. The test time was 3:00. Now I am freaking out because it is supposedly a 4 hour test and the prometric center closes at six. Would the test center allow me to select a time knowing my test time will not fit into the time frame? Anyone know about this?

CINCYCPA I am also scheduled to take my FAR exam on Nov. 30 at 4:00 PM. Do not worry as long as you received a confirmation from the prometric center , you are set to go. I wa freaking out too when I was scheduled to take my Auditing exam at 4:30 last window and I thought that the prometric will close before I am done with my test, however they told me that as long as there are test takers in the center, they remain open.

Hello all! I haven't posted since receiving a 74 iin FAR last window. I was just catching up on the blog and appreciate all of your cheering me on! Thanks, LSU_BR, FARbehind and CPAWannaBe. Please know that I am cheering for you also. Studying has been going pretty well. This last week was terrible because of the Oct 15th deadline. I have started Ch 8 in Becker and should finish it and Ch 9 this weekend which will give me slightly less than 3 weeks to review.

TEST DAY! eeekkk! lol. No really, I switched to Yaeger this time after making a 71, 72 and 74 with Becker. It's hard to describe how I feel today. My test is at 1 and I am lightly reviewing my notes. In the past, I have done tons and tons of MC questions and this time I only did Yaeger recommened questions twice. BUT I have learned so much these past 6 weeks. I feel more confident with journal entries and I have a MUCH better understanding of Cash Flows. On a side note, does anyone ever TRULY get Cash Flows. I'm not sure, but I know I know much more than I did before. Thank you Yaeger. With that said, I more nervous in a way this time. Maybe because it's the last qtr before FAR changes? Maybe because this is my 4th attempt and a 5th would just be embarrassing (LOL)? At the end of the day, I am satisfied knowing during this review I LEARNED things I did not know before and that has to count for something.
Thanks for all the well wishes. It is comforting knowing other people feel like you do. Cha Fay, FARbehind, CPAWannaBe and LSU_CPA, ya'll make this easier and I am grateful for this completely traumatizing (sp?) experience because I have met some of the most inspirational people. Okay I made it through my 4th FAR exam. I'm still not sure how I feel. I will say I did not mark any questions for review. I had promised myself I would not mark any this time and I wasn't even tempted once to do it. I switched to Yaeger this time and I think it helped tremendously. I had spent months doing Becker questions over and over and over and OVER, lol. I did those homework questions 9-10 times and at 1000+ questions each round that's alot of questions. But I think I was missing the point. I am great at memorizing but FAR is about more than memorizing. I worked and reviewed the Yaeger questions twice and concentrated more on LEARNING the concepts. I think that allowed me to handle each question as it came today and move on. I have no idea whether or not I passed and I've learned to not dwell on it because I have REG to focus on now. I wish everyone the best of luck and I do know one thing, persistence CANNOT be denied :)

That is great to hear!!! Did you see any new content in Yaeger that you hadn't already been exposed to in Becker? Or, do you think the explanations were more thorough in Yaeger? Or, perhaps you just changed your approach (more learning, less memorizing)?
I have FAR scheduled for 11/29, so I'm still trying to hedge my bets here - I actually own both Becker and Yaeger and am trying to decide how to use the rest of the time I have left to study. I'm scaaaarrrreeeeed of FAR. :)

I saw plenty I didn't learn in Becker. I'm not sure if Becker just didn't teach it or I just didn't get it. I do know Becker's method of teaching didn't work for me. Yaeger's seems to have worked and I am going to use it for REG. You have the best of both worlds it looks like. In my opinion, you should evaluate, honestly, whether or not you understand the material. If you understand it and feel like you can handle any questions they throw at you, then stick with Becker. If you felt like me and think you are just memorizing questions, look into Yaeger. It's difficult to give people advice because different materials work for different people. I think if you honestly evaluate your progress, you will make the right choice. Good luck :)

I think Becker teaches everything, but just like LSU_BR says, you have to get it. If you are getting it completely, you'll be fine with Becker. For concepts that are dificult to understand you can go to yeager and listen to their lecture. yeager has different approach to some concepts. they use more journal entries and T-accounts when they explain the concepts which is sometimes crucial in understanding. What is accounting without JE, right? Becker uses BASE formula instead.
For instance, in Becker, when converting from cash to accrual, they use the base formula or a T-account and it can be confusing. For the same concept yeager asks you to write the journal entry. I found this so much better and so easy to understand.
I find it helpful to listen to yeager and then go back to becker to reinforce the concept and use it as final review.

I think what I plan to do at this point is continue through Becker since I'm already used to their format (I do stop and read all of the explanations, as a general rule, if I don't understand why an answer is what it is) then go back and watch Yaeger videos and see if I can pick up anything new or maybe see a better way of doing things I might have struggled with in Becker. I tend to "think" in journal entries...my intermediate accounting teacher generally showed us both JE and T-accounts (but it has been about four years ago), but I tended to favor the journal entry approach. I think when I see the name of the account written out as a debit or credit, I can think, asset, liability, expense, etc., whereas when I see a bunch of T-accounts, the numbers all seem to just run together, and I have a hard time sorting them out for some reason. I do like the use of BASE though...helped me a lot in BEC with cost of goods manufactured, cost of goods sold, etc.

Okay, so to those of you who have already taken FAR, how much should I be worried about consolidation, deconsolidation, and intercompany transactions? It seems to be a fairly large chunk in Becker's F3, but Becker is not really teaching it (at least, not to me). I mean, I understand the more basic stuff, but my head is spinning right now - been working on this all day and don't feel that I've learned much. But, in skimming through Yaeger's notes, I don't see it.
I don't remember doing any of this stuff in intermediate accounting.
Can anyone tell me what module this is covered in using Yaeger?

Just got back from the exam earlier. Almost positive I failed. Unfortunately, for me, I'm not one of those people who think they've failed after every test and end up getting a 95.
That sucked in every way possible. Pretty sure the testlets stayed the same in terms of difficulty. But how can you really tell? Simulations were all over the place, made stupid mistakes on the first one and pretty much did nothing right on the second one after looking up the materials. The writing parts weren't that bad though, I'm pretty sure I did decent on those. However the second one really didn't require that much writing. I used the research tab and pretty much quoted the actual FAS that was applicable. Hopefully that was okay?
After frantically looking up a bunch of the questionable M/C I remember having trouble with, I actually didn't mess up on too many of them. But I'm pretty sure there is no way I could overcome the horrible showing on the simulations.
Has anyone experienced a complete debacle like this and ended up passing?

CPAWannaBe: I spent over a 100 hours at the office between 10/1 -10/14 so I haven't been online much. Come home to do the necessities in the house and then move on to studying.

Thanks for the heads up - I usually do okay with Becker in most areas, but when I come across a weak area, I just get so frustrated with the lack of instruction and/or glossing over areas without a sufficient explanation. I'm going to look at my Yaeger Module 16 tonight. My test isn't until 11/29, but I still have a whole lot of stuff ahead to muddle through between now and then. :)

I just got back from the exam today. My appointment was at 4 pm, but they let me sit as soon as I arrived at the test center.
First testlet was easy and I finished within 35min. Second and third testlets was much harder than first one but I think I did better than on my previous exams. I didn't see any questions which was not covered by Becker. Overall I feel good about MCQ.
Simulations. I didn't try to do the com and research part before because those points are not for me. My native language is not English and I know that I can't get many points on comm. and research. Usually, I start with other tabs and leave comm. part at the end. Today I start my first simulation with 1hour and 20 min left. I consider myself good with calculations but this time it was too much. My first simulation was very hard. I did how much I could on tabs and comm. part, and moved to the second simulation hoping that the second one will not be not as hard. The second sim was the same as first one and information spread all over.
I can't say that what I did on simulation was correct and without points from simulations, I can't pass.
I don't want to discourage you but for me simulations was very difficult.

I am glad you feel better than previous times. But I am mad at you for not doing the written communications. Do you know that WCs are 10 points of your score? You should always start with the WC before moving to the rest of the simulations. My native language is not English as well, so what? You sound perfectly fine. Just to let you know sometimes only 2-3 sentences are fine when you try to throw some key terms in them. Just to grab those points. You were smart that you took BEC this year because from 2011 all the WC will be concentrated in this exam. I am still mad at you for not trying WC...

evaianos I think Farbehind is right. English is my second language too and it usually took me more time to do the WC than the other tabs but I still do it and it earn me some points to pass. However, in my opinion you have a good chance of passing if you feel that you did good in your MCQ's. Keep on praying it works!

Just wanted to wish patience, motivation and luck on the exam to everyone on this forum. It took me a year to pass all four parts and I know how frustrating it becomes.
If I had to give an advice for people who are taking exam with second or third attempt - I'd say do minimum of lectures and reading. Buy Wiley test bank and learn from MCQ. Don't worry if at first you are not getting them - you learn from explanations, and Wiley has thousands of the same questions in different form to practice. That's how I passed REG. All best.

FARBEHIND the exam was such a narrow focus. the only variety i got wAS on the sims. whole topics were not represented. many conceptual questions. very tricky wording. i dont know how those that r not good in english language do so well. i did not even understand the research topics so i coould not even do those. very light on calculations. i only needed like 2 or more formulars..................seriously. mnenomics is a waste of time. either u know it or u dont. there was a major difficult topic for most ppl that was on all my testlet s. that was so weird.... my exam consisted of major topics and a few obsure topics......nothing in between or middle of the road. the sims were bloody and brutal. at first glance i was convinced i had failed but i just had to get myself together and tell myself that i knew them all but was too nervous to get it done with the twist and turn and tricky inserts. in fact u need 2hrs for those sims. especially the first sim
on the mcs i knew a lot of the difficult questions but had to guess and move on bcos it was so very time consuming to relax and solve. they were very short calculations but could not relax enough to actually compute it bcos of the twisted wording ,. kudos to those tht pass FAR

English is my second language but I do prefer English over Spanish since I learned all the accounting terms on that language. I'm also pretty good at writing and the communications tab feels to me like a "small bonus" the AICPA gives us. I'm actually scared I wont have those buffer points when I take REG on Jan 2011.

For me, I think it all depends on how I will structure my last 2 weeks of review now. Just as you say, some things are just waste of time. I am not going to spend a lot of time on simulations that's for sure. For me, studying for simulations is a waste of time. I need to know the core material and aim at doing really well on the mcq. Simulations are always hectic for me and I am sure will be this time as well. My goal is just have time to touch everything on the exam.
One technique I've been using lately and it's helping me is the following. When I work through calculations on the mcq I try to be aware of the traps from the beginning. When I am doing subcalculations I say to myself, aha I am getting this number and this is answer a, this is the first trap. Then I keep on calculating and then I am getting a second number and I see it among the choices and I know this is the second trap. That way I dissected the questions and naturally get to the right answer. For instance, if I am doing bond amortization and they ask me what is the carrying value at the end of the second year, when I go through the first year I look at the answer choices and I see they had the number there and I know what trap they have for me. That way I know I am going in the right direction. If I am not getting the wrong answers in my sub steps something is wrong with my approach. Someone else used this technique and it helped them?

sounds like a great way to study......i wish i had studied with some of these traps at the back of my mind, ....studying for sims is a big waste of time...been relaxed and having plenty of time is the key to doing well on sims..........anyone can figure out the sims if u have sufficient time but under such tense conditions it appears more difficult at first glance...
i think Yaeger does a great job of enabling u understand the concepts .... cramming mnenomics and formulars seemed like a huge time waster... i didnt even bother.............the key is first understanding the question........

FAR is my last section, and I took it again today (it's the only one I've failed - damn you August) and I realized too late that there was a certain way for me to study that would be most beneficial. Last night around 8pm I decided to write out formulas for the main types of calculations in FAR, because I found that certain calculations were my weakest point. I wish I'd done this sooner because I studied those notes until I went to bed and then again on my way to the exam and I think it helped me as much as anything I'd done in the previous 60-70 hours I'd studied.
Also, as I think Jeff has said, FAR is an inch deep and a mile wide. The problem is, the exam really does seem to be concentrated on select areas and you don't know which areas those are going to be. After failing in August, I did a little extra studying on some areas that were more heavily tested in that exam - and in some cases, I didn't get any questions at all on those areas the second time around, and there were definitely some areas that based on studying you'd expect to see, but weren't touched at all in the exam. It's also rough when you see something during studying where there are say, 2 methods to accounting for something and one is GAAP and used most of the time, and the other is not GAAP and rarely used. So common sense would tell you to focus on the GAAP material more, and then you go into the exam and you get tested on the opposite. FAR truly is a beast.

Hi... is there anyone here following becker... ?? i have a few doubts... how important are the concepts in the 2nd chapter ?? i.e :construction, accounting for installment sales, partnerships.... i could not find these in the content specification outline given in the text book....

F2 is HUGE in the exam. It's heavily tested and one of my least favorite chapters on FAR. I even prefer pension than F2 materials. My strategy was to read that chapter 3 or 4 times until it all synced up (it will for you too).

okay, so i took FAR earlier today for the 3rd time. first time was just a trial, i didnt study. second time i felt okay, but definitely not as prepared as i was today. i walked in there feeling pretty confident - i just knew so much information. i never have trouble with time - i normally have a few minutes to spare because i manage it pretty well. for some reason though today i felt that the ratio of work out questions to conceptual questions was like 5 to 1 (rough guess), and i needed more time on multiple choice questions, leaving me running out of time for simulations. so, my question for you guys. i felt pretty good with the first and third testlets of MC, and alright with the second i guess. i wasnt able to finish my simulations. on the first one i only did like 1 1/2 tabs and the writing, and on the second i did 1 and couldnt even get to the rest really. any miracle stories of passing after a situation like this?

hey everyone - I am new to the site and the CPA exam. FAR is my first exam scheduled and I'm taking it on November 23rd. eek!
I am using Becker and I'm about the finish up lecture 7. Since everyone at work seems to have a CPA already, I'm hoping to use the site to know there are people out there studying and trying to keep their sanity like I am!
Does anyone think there is a good section to take right after FAR? In terms of section material, etc. I currently work in tax (doing tax work for non-profits - which means hopefully lecture 8 of FAR isnt too bad!) so I am thinking REG could be a good next step. Do people usually wait to do FAR last?

I have similar experience with FAR, it seems like I get much more computational questions than theory questions. Most people here say they have opposite experience. I dont' know what to think. I don't mind computational questions most of the time, but cannot handle too many of them because of time constraint. No miracle story from me because I didn't pass but I hope you passed this time. As long as you did well on mcq (and you sound like you did) and did some work on the sims you have a good chance of passing. Best of Luck with your score!

Took FAR on Saturday. I hadn't revisited chapters 1 - 4 in Becker for a few weeks so I crammed those for 3 hours before my exam. I'm glad I did that because I found many questions that I thought "oh yea I know that I read that this morning". Unfortunately, I had very very few questions on the topics I really focused on. I still feel like I passed but that was a bummer.

Im new on the forum...Ive been studying since JULY!!! for FAR and AUD (finally set dates after NASBA took forver, nov 16th is AUD and FAR is the 18th)...figured I really wanna pass these 2 before IFRS is inherited next year, i jus completed undergrad at Loyola in MD and despite cheating my way thru college, have at least someeeee knowledge left.
I have the Becker stuff-in the beginning I started watching all lectures, doing MC, failing them, then redoing them, and "memorizing" answers...only to find out now when I go back i have NO clue...idk how I feel honestly-I think it really is gonna be a crapshoot as to whetehr I get ?'s I know vs. questions I dont.
I started about a month ago just doing the "Progress Tests" for every chapter (except F8 & F9, which havnt even looked at yet...gonna do them in about a week so its fresh becasue it seems as though govt/not4profit is really crazy) and working thru the m.c....when I get one wrong, I look at answer right away and make a post-it note or index card and stare at it everyday when I go to work...I really think this is gonna help when Im in the test and can hopefully visualize some of my cubicle walls.
Im also VERY worried about the journal entry aspect fo this test...Becker really doesnt cover it AT ALL and I still find myself using the pneumonic from freshman year of college to just remeber what to DR (AED = Assets, Expenses, Dividends) and what to CR (LCRR = Liabilities, Common Stock, Revenue, RE) haha...Should I be worried about the journal entries as much??? Im thinking if they come up, it will be on m.c. that should be easy enough to dissect, or worse, a Simulation that I will be totally screwed on..? Any suggestions about Journal Entry studying would be great or ya know what to really focus on (not easy ? I know....)

i am truly grateful to Yaeger for its teaching using Journal entries.....bcos it is what accounting is all about...and one shouldnt be a CPA without this knowledge....just my 0.02$

wow KDG03 Im in the SAME boatt haha except I have about 18 days til the test... Ive been studying since July and readiong forums and doing an insane amount of work and this is my gameplan I came up with for final review for the 16 days (also have AUD on 16th):
-Each day I have just enough to review every chapter in FAR and AUD (F1-9, A1-5) plus a couple days left over which Ive allocated (I hate my new vocabulary...) to Financial Ratios.
I dont know what review course you have if any, but my plan is to skim each chapter in Becker and mainly check out the Pass Keys and rewrite them, I feel like they have awesome info/tips on the specific little tricks...then do as many of the supplemental multiple choice I can for each chapter (usually like 70-100)...and then just HOPE I somehow have been retaining all this and dont choke :( ....but i WONT haha gotta be positive
Now, with your 5 days...not a lot but DONT FREAK OUT...from what Ive gathered on these forums and others is that that si the worst thing you can do-youve put in your time and now its a matter of applying it in a pressure situation, whihc youll do fine. Because you have such limited time, and deifnitley not enough to go over each chapter, I would do some Progress Tests/FAR sample exams and keep doing them over and over and over for the first 3 days...
As your doing them, make sure you NOTE which stuff you have NO IDEA or jus not refreshed on at all....I would create a list of those and use the last two days really keying in on specific problems you have trouble with...
Again, this test is so relative so it really is a crapshoot as to whether we get stuff we know or dont know...Be positive, take your time, focus & really read the questions...My new thing for multiple choice whihc has been a LIFESAVER is that I read the last sentence of each multiple choice answer first, then look at answers to see if a "0"/NONE is involved...AND THEN I start reading the detail...It has really taking some of the overwhelming calculation problems from FAR and made it soooooooo much more understandable

I just started using Becker about a month ago. Before that I was using CPAexcel. SO with it being towards the end of studying the material and attempting to transition between different review material, I have been a little bit overwhelmed. So your advice will help me focus a little more while studying/cramming this weekend.

Wow reading all these posts has me nervous and make me think maybe i shouldn't postpone Far for 2011. I took live classes with Becker for FAR during the summer and didn't understand everything so I started studying with lectures about 2 weeks ago and I still don't understand some of the concepts..F2 was painful to get though and left me feeling nervous and not sure if i should take FAR. I am on F-3 right now and some of the concepts are starting to make sense but now i am worried since i have a month before the exam ( i take it on Nov 29th.)..if I have enough time to get through the rest of the material and even have a shot at passing this exam or should I just continue studying and postpone the exam till next year? I passed REG in May..studied for BEC and failed by 5 points in Aug..waiting for AUD scores and am feeling a bit burnt by all the studying and FAR is my least fav subject..finding it really hard to focus! Guys, Please tell me Should I just keep studying and postpone the exam or continue to try to understand the concepts and attempt the exam as scheduled?

So...I am taking FAR on Oct 31st...Hoping & praying that I am prepared when I walk into that exam. I am feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment thinking of all the material I've studied for the past 8+ weeks for this exam....Here goes for hoping all that information stays in my brain until I take the exam. :) Good luck to everyone taking FAR this window.

For those of you that have taken FAR, I just took it. Man, was it tough! Hopefully a 75 however. What does it mean when the pencil in the simulation does not turn blue? One of my tabs I completed, but the pencil did not change colors at the top of the screen. Did I forget to do something?
