Glogo, Chapters 2 - 7 in Becker has the most information needed to pass this part. But dont just blow off Govt. and NFP.
Thanks! Very much appreciated! I'm only on Chapter 2 and my mind is spinning.
TN - Any advice on how to pass this thing the first time? Study strategies that you found made the difference?
OMG! I am soooo nervous. My exam is on February 10th and I am just plain freaking out! I need some motivation! I do NOT want to even glance at this gigantic book again, let alone study it intensely. I took this in July and got a 60 thinking, "How hard can this really be? I just went to school for this for four year." Well I was wrong as my score shows, and now I have Yaeger and I am just freaking out. Any advice? I only have a week and a half left.
I feel you KSgirld86 retaking next week!
Just retook FAR this morning. I have no idea if I passed but I definitely feel better walking out of there than I did the last time I took it which resulted in a 69. Now for the waiting game.
KSGirl86, hang in there. You are so close but you just need to stay focused for 10 more days. What's ten more days compared to a lifetime of having CPA behind your name?
I have 1 month left in the window and I am debating whether or not to move on to BEC. Work will likely get hellish soon enough (tax busy season) and I am wondering if I could fit 20 hours a week in there on top of that. I am open to any suggestions/words of encouragement...
Will It Ever End: I am already in the heat of busy and have been for about 2 weeks now. I don't remember having this much work this early on in the past, but boy are we busy. I completed several tax returns yesterday and had several more on my desk this morning. I am rewatching all of Yaeger's lectures and am going insane. I seriously don't know if I even have the power to do this. I passed BEC in three weeks. It seemed to go pretty well...I got an 82 and took it in November. I have one part down and hopefully two in a week and a half. I am just so darn nervous and already have the worst test anxiety. Is the material very deep? Or do I just need to focus on the concepts that are taught in the lectures and work the assigned multiple choice quesitons? Will that be enough? I have really bad self doubt and have given myself ulcers over this stinking exam. You could definitely pass BEC in this window. Just think you could have it done and that's one more closer to passing this exam and putting it all behind you. I just feel so overwhelmed and incompetent almost. Any advice?
My advice: take a day off. Plan on not looking at any material all day... maybe two. Don't feel guilty either. Sometimes when you get to this point it no good to try and push yourself.
FAR encompasses so many different topics that it pays to know a fair amount about everything. That being said, there are some things that you can concede on not learning. If it gives you a major headache it may not be worth the 1 question you'll get on the exam. You make the call. I spent the last week rereading the Becker book several times (not word for word). Didn't do any questions and just focused on the concepts themselves. Helped the big picture of things.
Hang in there.
Thanks! I sure am trying and I just keep telling myself..."You only have like 10 days and then you can relax until after tax season!" I do not have an option to fail in my opinion. I am kind of excited since Kansas University and Kansas State University go head-to-head tonight and also Miss America is on TLC and I am stoked (considering I have competed for Miss KS 3 times, lol). One thing people tell me about myself is that if I have my mind really set on something I will get it or achieve it. Well by golly my mind has been set on being a CPA since I discovered math lol! I love studying and I love tax season, but not at the same time. I just know I have to push through these next 10 days or so and then I can relax for a little bit (if you call tax season relaxing!) I am just stressing, so i have yaegers lectures on while I am cleaning house, doing laundry, etc and then I am like duh i knew that! I just get so nervous and anxious that I feel like I dont remember anything. If I just sit down and am not stressed or pushing myself and work mcqs it comes so easy. My anxiety is just absolutely awful!
I am taking it soon too... and am in freak out mood as well. I'm trying to just take it topic by topic and not look at it in whole because that's too intimidating. When I start freaking out, I can't study. When I can't focus on studying, then I start to freak out about the thought of taking it again. It's a vicious cycle haha.
So I'm trying to take my own advice and just look at the test in smaller pieces.
I am taking it this week and hoping for the best.
KSgirl86,
That is so funny you said you love studying and tax season, but not at the same time. I have been doing taxes for 5 years now and this is the first time I've ever looked forward to it because I was so sick of studying FAR. I spent 2 1/2 months studying it and was so burnt out.
My advice is to not wear yourself out right before your exam. The study questions are harder than most of the real exam questions (at least that is what I thought but my score may reflect differently in 3 weeks). If you have time, look over some AICPA released questions. I know that helped me get an extra point or two.
Good luck!
Im confused,
My main study plan is through Yeager and Wiley. I also threw in Gleim this time. How come there are questions from both study programs with entirely different answers???
Advice needed...
Hey everyone, I started studying for FAR on 1/25 (last week). It didn't start very smoothly and there have been some distractions, notably my Grandma passed away this past Friday, her funeral/wake are tomorrow. I am scheduled to take the exam 2/26. I am very nervous... I am worried I won't have enough time to study and prepare with just under 4 weeks left... Can you guys please give me some tips/advice on how to appraoch this when I hit the book again starting Wednesday? I am using Becker. I have not sat for the exam yet. I can commit 6-8 hours a day or 30/40 hours a week.
Thanks SO much in advance.
Sounds fine although I am retaking it, I studied since Jan 4th,
I took FAR today, I thought my first MC testlet was easy, but then they definately got harder, which is expected. The SIMs were fair for the most part although I thought one was very poorly assembled (it wasn't a difficult topic, but I wasn't sure what they were implying) Overall, it wasn't nearly as bad as REG where I walked out feeling like a moron. Hopefully thats a good sign for me.
To Glogo2384, I used Becker (and Wiley to a lesser extent) and I'd suggest studying backwards through Becker, because all the topics at the end are the difficult ones, the first half of the book is the material they've been pounding in our heads since Principles 2100. Everything in Becker was tested, but the hard questions all came from the later material.
Hopefully that advice doesn't overstep the sacred bounds of the AICPA
I'm a newbie to this forum. I've been reading it on and off for a few weeks to help get me through my last few weeks of studying for FAR. I, too, took theFAR exam today and I'm still reeling almost 9 hours later. A little background - I've been doing hedge fund/private equity accounting for 7 years and I am up for a Director position this summer (currently a manager in a small - 50 employee - private investment advisor firm). I think passing the CPA exam would give me an extra leg up on that position. While I feel like my actual work experience is great, FAR encompasses so much more than anything I have ever done in accounting. That said, I studied a lot. I put aside my entire life for the past 6-7 weeks and took every spare minute to study. I really felt like I had the Becker book down.
My test experience today - I breezed through the first section. I literally thought - wow, I studied way too much. 2nd testlet was definitely more tough. 3rd was even harder! I literally felt like I was guessing on half of the questions in the 3rd testlet. Frustrating! I agree that the sims were fair; much better than REG. It's hard to walk out of a test feeling like you've put so much time in and only feel confident with 3 out of 5 of the testlets.
The only other exam I've taken is REG and I came out of that feeling like I got a 50%, and ended up with an 88; so, keeping my fingers crossed. It's just so hard to gauge what you're answering correctly when you're making 'educated guesses'. Hoping all the studying has paid off... I guess there's nothing to do except wait...
I have been using Gleim to prepare for FAR. I have 2009 Yeager cram. Should I use the cram or just keep going with my primary review material? If I use the cram how close to the test should I use it?
if you have time prepare with Gleim. Use Yeager and Wiley only. Gleim has some odd answers.
Taking it tomorrow God Help me.
Good luck tomorrow!!! I still feel like nothing I'm studying is sticking in my brain. I'm even considering not watching the Super Bowl just so I can get some extra study time in, GASP!!!
Far is going to be the death of me!! I'm using Becker... the test is on the 26th and I've got 3 chapters left to get through before I can start reviewing.
Thanks,
You will have enough time to finish. I am starting BEC next week and taking on 26th also.
For those who may want a suggestion or want to know how I passed far on my first try in the 80's. I used Becker, studied for about 4 weeks, 1 week casually doing 1 chapter, then the other 8 chapters in 3 weeks. I work from 8am-8pm so i would get home at 9pm during weekdays, study till 12 or 1 am. then on weekends, both saturday and sunday i would wake up at 9am, study till 1 am the next day (with a few 20-30 minute breaks thruout the day). I did this for 3 weeks and the day before the test I finished chapter 8, and rushed thru chapter 9...finished chapter 9 about 8pm the night before the test. Having gone thru each chapter once, I then started my review and it went from 8pm to 4am, test at 1pm an hour away (not fun). so not much sleep, a quick review....the review is key. spend about 1.5-3 hours going over each chapter within the 2 days b4 the exam, going over topics that are important in the chapter and doing the 15-20 problems in the book at the end of each chapter. then if you have time do some of the passmaster problems for each chapter. maybe u need more than 3 weeks to study for far :(.
try not to blow off non prof/gove...if you have to blow one off i suggest not doing non prof, but if u have time do both as there are a ton of questions on these. For these 2 last chapters know the very basics and u will know 75% of the ch 8/9 questions on the test. ALso, i wouldnt stress too much about the simulation. I know for a fact that I bombed both of the simulations and probably got under 50% correct on them, but somehow I got Stronger than other passing people. If you are going to master one thing I would try and do really well on the communication/memo its 10% of the entire test and doesnt take that long. I got Weaker score on that part :(.
February score release update:

*sigh*
I either really knew the material or those gotcha questions got me. Mainly stuff where you either know it or you don't. The 3rd testlet took the longest not sure if I was just tired....The sims weren't as bad as people are claiming, must of got lucky. Its up to fate now.
More advice needed.
Everyone, it's been a crazy past few weeks for me. I haven't been able to focus with everything going on (grandma's passing, awaiting my REG score, and studying for FAR)... that being said... I started to hit FAR again today. I am using Becker and my test is scheduled for 2/26. By my calculation, that's 3 weeks from tomorrow... sounds like enough prep time, but with FAR, I'm not sure....
Status: I wrapped up F-2 today and started on F-3. I study for approx. 7 hours a day from basically 9AM to 5PM (with some bathroom breaks in between). I shoot to get a lecture in and do the questions in that time frame, I also touch on the SIMs. However, with FAR, I find that I am not absorbing enough and am scoring pretty low on MCs ?'s - Averaged in the 50-60% for F-1 and F-2 material. ALL THE ABOVE BEING SAID...
Can you please give me some advice/insight on how to best approach this review material? What are some methods that worked with you and Becker? Do the lectures first? Then the questions? Then the SIMs? Should I re-write the outline?! I am just panicing because I have 7 chapters left and the first 2 didn't really go well, and I have 3 weeks left... ANY ADVICE would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Taking FAR on 2/25, and I gotta tell ya, its kicking my butt. I'm in Becker and just finished the live class last week. Working the questions, have not yet worked a single sim, but feel in 3 weeks I should be comfortable enough to pass. The problem is the Becker courses are part of my master's degree, so I begin Auditing tomorrow! I'm going to have lots of info scattered about my brain...
Just finished doing the multiple choice for section 5 on FAR from Becker, that was one of the worst experiences ever, I had to read each question like 5 times, bonds are impossible, I sure hope the questions aren't as confusing on the actual exam as they are in the becker material, that was torture. I just finished and I already forget every question I read. I just want it to end, I can't take it anymore.
Yeah the bonds section was brutal.
Glogo, first of all, I didnt pass FAR the first time. I got a 62. Studied somemore and got a 71. I knew coming out of the exam that i had missed it but knew I had done better. I was fired up about a 9 point jump. Becker Final Review (live session in Atlanta helped).
Studied for three months on FAR only then passed with a 85 (yes, the score surprised me). Anyway, watching the lectures three times helps. Each time something else gets clarified. I watched the lectures then did the MCs. After three weeks for three chapters, I went back and did the supplementals questions. I took the Becker Final Review again (at home via CD this time). Rested one whole day and took the FAR exam. I didnt finish the second SIM. I did the comm. tab and threw some number out on the other tabs.
Bottom line; FAR is passed in the three MCs testlet....just my opionion.
