FAR – Government Accounting

I am taking FAR first thing Monday morning. Government accounting is going to be the death of me. I think I could answer some basic conceptual multiple choice questions, but I’d be screwed with a question requiring much mathematical calculation, or god forbid a sim. With my remaining day and a half to study, should I spend more time trying to get this to sink in, or should I focus on bolstering my other topic areas? FYI, I’m using Becker.

Govt/NFP accounting accounts for 16-24 percent of the exam so I would say you try to understand it more 🙂

I just took FAR at the end of February (also using Becker) and I highly recommend continuing to study Govt/NFP. Like Golfball says Govt/NFP constitutes a good portion of the exam so dont think that there will be few/no questions on the exam…sorry, I know it's not a fun topic and most of us likely will not use this in our careers 🙁

    Good Luck!

Yep you definitely need to have a good understanding of Govt. and NFP. It is heavily tested.

Study it, it is the reason I failed. I did not study it at all and got a 68

Few of us, myself included, will have in depth knowledge in every area. That's especially true for subjects we don't like and we don't intend to work in that area. However, with a 75 required to pass, it's cutting things too close to ignore an entire section that could be 10% to 20% of your test on a particular day. Even if you're short on time, you should at least try to know the key concepts from the Ninja notes.

Call Me Al sums it up well. You're not going to be a master in all topics, but knowing key concepts will give you the extra points you need. At least memorize the funds and their structure, the GRaSPP- SI-PAPI (thank you Tim Gearty) and go further into it if you have time. There are strange concepts you might need to take a little longer to study to fully grasp. I'm not for cutting material out, but I put less time into F10 and didn't feel it was an issue.

Strangely enough govt/NFP is the only section I've been stronger in for some reason except it still hasn't been enough for me. Good luck, you got this!

study the concepts of Gov't NFP accounting.

    types of funds
what type of accounting they use
what focus – economic resource or current financial resource
what has FA and LTD and what doesn't

those basic concepts should help you if you can get your head around them well

says the candidate taking FAR for the 3rd time in 2 weeks. (ha ha) my results say “stronger” in gov't though. 🙂

I failed with a 72 because of a GNP sim. The multiple choice questions werent to bad. I suggest you strengthen GNP as much as you can.

i think having the absolute basics down is essential for the exam. at the very least know the types of funds, the basis of accounting, and the financial statements required for each type. for government/nfp funds make sure you know how the fund balances are classified. even if you can't master everything, try not to lose the easier mcq points because you didn't have the basics down.

Having taken a gov class my last semester is the reason I was able to pass with a 75. I strongly suggest you have a good understanding on both, especially their respective journal entries.

How far in detail for Govt/NFP? I am studying the last section of Gleim now, which is NFP. I just finished the chapters on Govt. My next move is to review after finishing up the last chapter. Just curious as to the level of detail for NFP, etc. I have a pretty good understanding, but if they yank some detail out of one of the statements, I might not remember it.

What do they call an accounting person, who only managed a 75 on all four parts of the CPA exam....you got it, CPA!!!
