FAR = Undoable at this point?

There is just no way I can completely study for FAR in 19 days. I am STILL on F3, (almost done though maybe another 20 minutes; then I will do the majority or at least half of F4 today.)

Im honestly not feeling very good at all about FAR. Every question is a different concept. Some MCQ’s have taken me 10 minutes to figure out! I wanted to be done with Becker once, then do the MCQ’s (all of them) again, and then Wiley if I had time. But it seems that I won’t be able to do that even. If I am lucky at this point maybe the questions twice. Im not even studying the SIM’s, I am skipping them, and will review the answers the a few days before the exam. (they are unhelpful to practice).

I don’t know what I should do?… It takes me about 1-1.5 days to read the chapter, and do all MCQ’s. I will start F4 today.

    Please help!

My theory is do what I can and reschedule if needed. I started studying for FAR in April – after tax season was over. I find the sheet amount of information completely overwhelming. It took me four months to get through the material the first time – but I also work and have two kids. I'm just now starting to feel like I can go in and possibly pass. I think it's different for everyone. Do what you can and go with what works for you. Good luck. 🙂

Thank you!! Good luck to you as well.. I don't work, I just study all day (or at least I have the time too).. It just man.. sometimes I lose motivation.. and yeah, FAR is psychotically overwhelming to the point where I think if I stab myself in the leg I still won't feel the same pain I do while doing these questions.

If your goal is to finish quick and go to the MCQs, I would advise you to just listen to the lectures (about 4 hours each) and go straight to the questions then learn from trial and errors. After all, for Becker, the answers to the questions are extracted from the book and explain well every concept. It worked for me in 3 of my exams but I'm not sure it works for everyone.

I only use this method because of time constraint. If I have more time, I would have studied the entire material from A to Z and perhaps I would have gotten better passing grades but Pass is Pass. Isn't it?

    Good luck picking up speed.

@CPA_Driven – Hah! I am at the library as well, just about ready to throw my laptop out the window….

@Path To CPA – Thank you for your advice. I did however, watch all the lectures 1-10 in about 4 days! So all I am doing now is trying to spend 1 day MAX (1.5 if reallllly needed) to read the book & do all MCQ's. Im just not sure if I will be able to accomplish this in the timeframe. I mean, ive heard people tell me that FAR does not go into much details on the exam.. but reading peoples posts on this site, say otherwise.. I've heard very complicated/complex calculations, stuff becker barely touched on.. etc.

Im skipping SIM's since they take me a few hours and never helped me for REG, AUD or BEC. I do review the answers though in maybe 5-6 hours for all F1-F10.

Its just so many calculations.. I mean I know Becker does a GREAT job preparing me for the exam.. but … im just so overwhelmed right now.. I should of maybe done FAR first.

I didn't use Becker so I can't tell you if you will be able to do all you want in 19 days.

However, I can tell you FAR seems like a section that you could study forever and still feel like you are missing something.

I pushed my FAR exam back 3 times before I finally told myself I had to take the beast.

To be honest, I slacked in studying every time I rescheduled the exam until I made the third time my final reschedule. If you buckle down and study for those 19 days like it's a full time job, then I think you can be ready for the exam.

NIU CPA Review Correspondence is awesome!

I passed all four sections on the first attempt

I am trying!!! I am starting F4 now.. I read each subtopic and then do all the MCQ's for that subtopic and move on to the next subtopic.. You're right.. i don't think anyone will ever feel ready for this exam.. Its now or never.

i think you should see how far you are and how you feel about the exam one week from now– if you still feel like it wasn't enough time then you should definitely reschedule it…

Well by next fri/sat (at the latest) i should have F1-F10 done one time. All lectures, reading & MCQ's. It wil give me about 10 days to do MCQ's.. I should be able to do that.. I just need to get done with everything one time ASAP.

    Thats crazy!

So you've watched all the lectures and have 7 chapters worth of homework remaining? and 19 days left? It's very doable.

If you do one chapters worth of homework a day, you'll have 12 days for review. If you can push yourself even harder (like you seem to be trying to), you'll have more time for review. I think you'll be fine. It's a strict schedule – but you can do it.

I agree with whoever above said skip the reading. You already watched the lectures no reason to do the same work 2x if you're running out of time – personally, even if I have time, I don't read the book AND do the lectures, time is better spent doing MCQs and progress tests. The lectures basically just read through the book anyway.

1st. You can pass this exam. If not now, then next time, but it's do-able…so have faith!

    2. There are NO lectures on the exam, no video presentations, and no chapters to read.

    3. The exam is a stack o' accounting problems….What am I getting at here: Study for the test. You can probably pass 1/2 of FAR right now…Work the problems, figure out what you DON'T know, and spend your time there.

Example: Hey look at this, accelerated depreciation, I'm good…skip!

We (humans) tend to get in a comfort zone and we're happy to spend time working on the stuff we can already do…Success on the CPA exam requires …DEMANDS you make like an iron man with the stuff you hate.

Many people get tripped on the Gov / NPO stuff and don't dig fund accounting…be honest with yourself about it…and then decide to punch it in the mouth !

    You CAN do it.

    Go get 'em.

Thanks guys!! I sure hope I can pass this beast of an exam called FAR. I am going to try and do F1-F5 all 933 problems in 1 day after I do everything once, as a practice test. (I've done REG all of tax 650q in 5.5 hrs so this is doable for me), and then the next day do F6-F10. Then go from there on my weak points and drill those down.

If I have more time, or need extra help, I will probably read the section over again, and do the problems I had trouble with or anything I wasn't too confident on.

If time persists I will try and do A LOTTT of wiley problems, and maybe spend 1 whole day going over the SIM's from Wiley & Becker.

I usually spend the last 2 days doing Final Exam 1 & Final Exam 2 and going over them. They are usually a pretty good indicator for me on how I will do.. (I usually do 10-15 points higher on the real thing). I also read the flashcards one or two times the day before.

I did want to skip reading, but I always feel guilty, and I feel that I learn more when I read and then do MCQ's, as opposed to guessing and learning from the MCQ's. I just hope I never have to do this exam ever AGAIN. People who take this exam over and over and over again are my idols.. I would break everything in my path if I had too.

    Thanks for the encouragement guys!!!!!

I wanted to jump back with one more point that I hope helps…

“as opposed to guessing and learning from the MCQ's”

Here's my key to success with those: Focus on a topic you're having trouble with and really, really walk through the problems…follow along the example and say it outloud…”Okay, MR. Wiley, where did that number come from…How did you get the numerator…” etc.

Force yourself to walk through the problems and repeat each step….write it out, every damn line and number (don't just read it over, write it out)… and ask yourself, Okay, double declining balance, where did they subtract that from last year's…etc. Do this several times and you WILL put your brain on autopilot for those problems. I assure you!

Good luck and don't ever quit.
