Favoritism and politics in accounting world

Hey everyone! I work in corporate accounting. At the place where I work if you don’t hang out with our Controller, you don’t get promotions/raises and stuff… It’s just stupid. There is a lot of favoritism, like huge mistakes by others are unnoticed and they are protected and first in line for promotions, but mine might be exaggerated and all the hard work is unnoticed. I raised this issue very politely and had a very serious conversation once and it seems my arguments made the situation a little better for me. It seems they started to value and respect me more when I stood up for myself. But still I don’t know how to deal with that on day to day basis. It just makes me sick. I don’t want to hang with anybody and lick somebody’s ass, but to keep it professional, and ideally just move to another company. But meanwhile how to deal with that? Anybody? It seems like it’s getting to me and makes me nervous and makes studying for CPA harder than it should be.

Politics are very important for you to progress in your career whether we like it or not. Why would you leave the company? the political situation is the same everywhere.

there are plenty of companies with a healthy environment. In fact I never observed much of favoritism and I am working in accounting since 2002

There are usually some politics at play in most organizations, but it sounds like your workplace has it very bad/toxic. I'd look to move somewhere else for sure.

Wherever you have humans interacting with each other, you are going to have politics. It's a matter of degree. It seems to me that when you have a lot of young people, politics get amplified with even managers getting involved in the cliche stuff.
