I have wondered this since college. What is the benefit of having Federal work study? I mean it is part of the financial aid package but I was always thinking it was just a minimum wage job on campus, but now I am wondering if you don’t pay income taxes on it, is that the benefit? Just curious if there is a specific benefit other then just having a job on campus.

Just like any other job, you have to pay taxes on it if you earn enough. But then when you apply for FAFSA the next year, that income doesn't count toward your ability to pay for school.

The jobs are generally going to be flexible and work around your school schedule — another major advantage.

For the student – very flexible, on-campus so no worries about traveling to work, etc.

For the college – the government pays back all the costs.

So, because of the college benefit, it also means more jobs and more availability. I've seen work study students who basically just sit around for their shift cause the college doesn't have work in that department, but you can bet the college wouldn't be paying them to sit if they actually had to pay for it.
