I wouldn't attach a lot of importance to the practice final exams..don't let that beat you down at this point.
Best of luck to all!

I wouldn't attach a lot of importance to the practice final exams..don't let that beat you down at this point.
Best of luck to all!
Using Yaeger Home Study.....finally done w/DVD's, and am now going back over each chapter reading all my notes & the handout that goes w/each chapter, then working the minimum MCQ for each chapter.
I guess I was expecting this to go the same as BEC & AUD, which I used this same technique. As I am doing the MCQ, I am keeping track of my score, and am getting around 50% correct, where with BEC & AUD, I would get between 70-80%.
This is really putting a damper on my studying!!!
I guess I won't be trying to squeeze REG in this window also....guess I'll be slowing down and reviewing alot more FAR.
Any suggestions/comments?
CPA-Valenz- Don't get discouraged! I am used to getting in the 70% 80% and 90% the first time around doing homework during all my other study sessions for exams but now that I am on FAR I have been lucky to get in the 60% and 70%. I also consider financial accounting one of my strong suits. I just think that there is so much information to remember and cover that it gets a bit overwhelming the first time around. I have started to go back through at try some homework again and am doing much better on them the second time around. I am also in a prep class as part of my masters program and everyone in the class seems to be having the same experience as well as far as getting in the 50% the first time around. I would just keep your head up and really rely on your final review of going back through the homework as a good measure of where you are. I plan on going back through and if I do really bad on a section for the second time I will carefully reread that section of the book to see what I am missing. Just thought I would let you know that you are not alone in this terrible section of the exam. FAR is my last one and it is living up to its name. I hope this makes you feel better and encourages you to keep pressing on!!
hi everybody!! i am sitting for FAR aug. 31 (in MA). i just took BEC a few days ago for the 3rd time and think the exam went pretty well. you can never tell with these exams, though, but i am hopeful!
i used yaeger homestudy for BEC because Becker wasn't doing it for me the first 2 times. i used Becker for AUD and REG and will also be using it for FAR as well. i am on chapter 2 so far.
Thanks you beckeralltheway, for your kind words.
I am still truding through the questions, and making myself a cheat sheet as I go, I already have my notes from the DVD's which are quite lengthy.
I will get it .... just apparently not as quickly as I did for AUD and BEC.
MPoni, Hi! Glad to hear BEC went OK for you this round - you will get a passing grade in a few weeks!!
I'm also using Becker and have my exam scheduled for Aug. 27. I've done the lectures through Ch. 4, but I'm not through all the MCQs yet. I have Becker's Final Review so I hope/plan to have time to get through that as well.
hi connie!! thanks - i have a good feeling about BEC, but only time will tell! i have about a month's wait lol so i just gotta move on to FAR! i honestly wish i had Yaeger for FAR, but don't wanna spend another $400 to get it. I already ordered the Becker 2010 software months ago before I decided to sit for BEC again before doing FAR...so i mine as well use it.
i just finished chapter 2 - i thought it was pretty intense! i had a few weeks off from work, which is good, but i got back monday so i am trying to get through a few more chapters before i go back.
it's nice to know we are doing FAR together (and hopefully the last section for me!) congrats on all your other 3 passes!! :) no screwing around for me for the next 5 1/2 weeks!!
MAN!!! Trying to remember all of these formulas & JE....plus everything else is KILLING ME!!
One of the most frustrating things about taking FAR 3 freaking times is that I remember topics that were previously tested and I'd really get those down pat and then they would not be anywhere on the next exam. Topics Becker said were "critical" to learn were no where on my exam the other day.
I will say that I think the questions are overall easier than the study guide's. Regardless, just know how to do them so you know what sneaky tricks the examiners will pull. Besides the simulations, the questions were not that complex. Then again, I probably got the pity testlets.
Hey, I have been cheering for all of you who tested this week. Keep your heads up! Don't be discouraged! I am testing next Saturday 7/31 and am finding it more and more difficult to study. I was thinking that I would be so pumped up since this is my last part but I literally feel like my body is shutting down! I just want to go to sleep at night; I don't want to stay up and study! I have taken some progress tests and am scoring between 60-90% on individual sections. I am going to take a simulated exam tonight. Then work on some sims this weekend then more MCQs next week leading up to the exam. Do you think that sounds like a good plan?
What study material are you using ChaFay? You still have another 1.5 weeks to study, so it sounds like you have a good review plan going. I probably wouldn't bother doing any of the sims till a few nights before only because we all know the sims will be nothing like the study material ones. lol I just think it is more beneficial to go over multiple choice questions and focus on the questions that you are still getting wrong (since you scored 60% on some progress tests).
I just ordered Yaeger Homestudy for FAR!! I was using Becker 2010 software for FAR, but ordered Yaeger for BEC and absolutely love their teaching style. I am hoping I passed BEC, but either way they actually explain concepts and go over problems with you, which is in line with the way I learn. It will be an intense 5.5 weeks, but I am ready! Yaeger makes me feel confident lol.
ChaFayCPA
I think that sounds like the best possible way you could be spending your last week before an exam. That is always what my last week to two weeks look like, final exams, simulations, and doing the multiple choice on sections I am still struggling with. The progress tests are a really great way to lead you to what sections you might want to go over this last week. Good luck! I am still about 3 weeks out, I am so ready to get this one over with because it is my last one too! I am definitely feeling you on the whole body and brain shutting down thing. I feel like I have been studying for this thing for my whole life! I can't wait to be done! Just finish this last week really strong so that you will be as prepared as you can be for the exam! I hope things go well for you and congratulations on taking your final exam!
MPoni and Becker: Thanks for the encouragement. I have been using Becker and it seems to have worked well for the other sections. The volume of info in FAR is just so much!
MPoni: Just think in 5.5 weeks you'll be through! How'd you feel after taking BEC earlier this week?
Becker: Congrats back to you! Keep me posted. Hope your next few weeks of studying go well! When did you start the whole process?
Hope you do well ChaFay. You have a little one, right? You're setting a wonderful example. Just think how exciting this will be to finally be done!
Thanks @Potatogun
@CPAWannaBe: Thank you! I hope your test went well this week! I actually have two kiddos.......the 8-year old asked me last night......"Mom, do you remember when you used to do fun things with us?" What a stab in the heart!! I keep telling him only another week and half. The 3-year old is the one who gets her notebook and highlighter out and says she has to study! We are praying for God's best! So ready for this to be behind me!
I see you are starting to study for audit. I gave myself 5 weeks to study on that one. I don't do much in the way of audits, but do several comps and reviews and felt like Becker prepared me well for it. Are you taking BEC in the Oct/Nov window? Best wishes to you in all the parts!
I have 3.5 days left till Monday.
I'm redoing MCQs for Govt and NFP (which I only did once before) and the Supplemental for Govt and NFP (which I haven't done yet).
Then tomorrow Simulated Exam #1, Saturday Final Review, and Sunday Simulated Exam #2.
Does that sound like something orthodox?
@ItalianCPA: Sounds like a plan to me! Hope it goes well for you!
I have exam on July 31. Trying to figure out the best way to complete my revision. I have done Becker, listened to lectures and did MCQ's one time and reviewed the simulations. Should I start redoing the MCQ's, read the book cover to cover, do the practice tests or do the simulated exam? All suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Can anyone help me how to learn "Bonds"? I am having problem understanding all bonds.
- convertible bonds
- bonds with options
- bonds with warrants
It just does not make sense to me at all. I spent all night last night on this one topic and is still very confused. Is there any way or approach to better understand bonds and related questions? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
@desperate to pass are you using Becker? They have a pretty good lecture on bonds. The best way to learn it is to listen to the lecture, read the book and then try to make your own notes. hope this helps. Good luck.
is somebody (who scored a lot on FAR or generally scores very high) willing to give me their e-mail address so that I can ask them a few confidential qs? i am so desperate about FAR now, i feel like i will never pass it. it feels like these people (aicpa) are making fun of me. pls help.........................
hey chayfay - I felt pretty good after taking BEC on monday!! I am really hoping i passed since it's my 3rd time taking it, but only time will tell.
I did use Becker for AUD and REG and it worked fine...but I definitely struggled with BEC material and that's why I ordered Yaeger because I needed something different to boost my score. I went from a 66 to a 71 using Yaeger CRAM...but I still didn't have the concepts down 100%. I feel that Yaeger really explains the concepts so I ordered it for FAR, too!
Good luck with the rest of your FAR studies! :)
After I received the 71 after using Yaeger CRAM (which was a 5 point increase from the last time), I ordered the homestudy. BEC has been the nightmare for me so far...and hopefully I can put it behind me!!
speaking of not understanding things. how in the world do you "get" deferred tax assets and liabilities. i am having a world of trouble and i usually can understand things pretty quick. it seems that i can get the majority of the questions correct but i don't understand how i am doing it.
as far as understanding the convertable bonds...if you spent an entire night on it and are still confused, I would recomend to move on. There is so much material on FAR that it will not kill you to not be an expert on something so small as convertable bonds. I agree...they are confusing. I just did my best w/ them. Just my opinion on how to best tackle this thing.
Have a question, am trying to schedule a date where I can sit my FAR exam using the prometric website. Am at a section on their website where it says I have to provide an "Exam Section ID ". Does anybody know where I can get that information? Am in California...maybe the folks who have used this service can point me in the right direction.
whonis2002
On the BTS there is a grid with Exam Section & Section ID & your launch code for the exam. Do you have the NTS?
Exam in 13 hours! Oh no! :-(
big shot cpa
Good luck! Hope you do great and get plenty of rest tonight!
Just paid for the exam section today and was advised it will take 5 business days to arrive in mail.
Good Luck big shot cpa!
Good luck, Big Shot. Send us an update when you recover!
Thank you all for your support! I love how friendly everyone is on this forum! I will def update on how it went sometime tomorrow.
keepon - i have only dealt with calculating deferred tax assets or liabilities on a few clients at work and know that they come about a lot of times when the client is on a fiscal year-end. (i think normally with C-corporations that pay taxes). basically because they are on a different year-end, they aren't reporting income/loss from calendar year. so normally they will have a deferred tax asset/liability on the income/loss they would have reported if they were on a calendar year end. i think you also take into consideration depreciation timing differences (tax depreciation vs. book depreciation) and also if the client is on cash basis for tax and accrual basis for financial statements. (take difference between both A/R and A/P from current year and prior year)...which also goes into the calculation. plus i think some tax rate is also used for Fed and state purposes.
hope that helps a tiny bit!! i agree they are very confusing!
good luck big shot cpa!!
whonis2002
As far as I know you need the NTS and the info on that document to schedule the exam. Perhaps if you called the folks who mailed the document thay may give you the number? Not sure if they will give the information over the phone - but you can try.
Thanks cpa journey, just received it via email.Well its official I sit for the Beast on 8/31. Am so scared just in the middle of chapter 3 MCQ's Becker review. So worried I may not cover everything. Hopefully the remaining 5 1/2 weeks will be enough for me.
whonis2002
Feeling the same way. Hope I van cover everything well enough and the Beast asks what I know! Good luck!
just finished FAR Lecture 5 on Becker. Only 4 more of these things thank GOD
CardFanCPA, after each lecture and chapter are you tackling all the MCQ's + supplementals for that particular chapter? Just did the practice MCQ's for Chapters 1 and 2 , got 63% on each......Gee this is frustrating thought I had a good understanding in those two chapters..looks like I was wrong. Need to try again anybody going through the same?? :((
I took FAR today and I honestly don't know what to think. I never really know if I 100% passed or 100% didn't - I just feel drained. There was nothing on the test that I didn't know, but time was really working against me.
I didn't finish my last simulation....I did the research tab & the communication tab then attempted to fill-in as much information as I could on the other 3 tabs, but complete any of those. Has anyone ever passed without finishing a simulation? I THINK I passed REG without finishing one of my sims, but I can't remember.
My friend took it today too - hers was at 8 and mine was at noon. She was done at 11...so she finished an hour early. She's taken it twice before, but she only studied 2 weeks for it this time - I'm trying to figure out how she finished so darn fast. Both of my sims were really long, so maybe that had something to do with it.
Anyhow, I reckon there isn't much I can do now. It is my last section though, so the wait for scores is going to be brutal. My goal is to be a CPA by the time I turn 25 in December - however, I'd REALLY like to have that accomplished before I get married in September....time for a nap! :)
Have a great weekend everyone!
Philippians 4:13
Whonis I am in the exact same situation as you. I am up to lesson 3 in Becker (I go to the live classes so tomorrow is lessons 4&5) but I am taking the MCQ and getting really low scores. It is very frustrating!! I feel like I am never going to get this!! Well I guess all we can do is keep on studying!! Good luck!!
OverwhelmedHG,
I am in the same situation as you. I took it today as well and it blew my mind. I didn't finish my sims either. Hopefully we did well enough on the MCQ to pass. I have AUD next so I don't even have time to sit and worry about FAR. I am just glad that I am not the only one that felt like their brain was fried afterwards.
In panic mode.... Exam in 7 days
Exam on Monday.....took a simulated exam on Becker this morning and I actually feel relaxed today and really doing nothing else..... tomorrow I'll do the Becker Final Review.
italianCPA
Good Luck for Monday! Sounds like you are in good shpe for the FAR exam!
Good luck italianCPA, looks like your on fire for this FAR exam.
Kathyb16 and cpa journey, I guess we have to keep at it. Hopefully by the time I get to chapter 5 I still remember the MCQ's for 1,2,3 and 4. But as everybody in this forum says you have to flip back and skim through those questions once in while. I guess my question is how often does one have to do this?
italianCPA,
good luck on your exam! I really think becker is harder than the real thing so you should be able to do well unless you get an odd exam!
Other fellow FAR sufferers,
I felt ok after my exam (had a separate post so don't want to repeat it), but I start to doubt myself now. It was so weird that my exam was about 50% theory/non-calc questions, I don't know what to think of it! That's why I was able to fly through 3 testlets in 1.5 hours! And none of my calculations were complicated or wordy! Anyway, I did put in about 300+ hours studying for FAR and I think becker homeworks were HARD, not so much my exam :-/ Ok I will stop torturing myself now and move to AUD (8 hour class tomorrow) then go somewhere for the rest of the weekend! (my boyfriend's been going through this with me, he deserves a vacation as much as I do).
Best just not to think about it until it is score release time.
ItalianCPA, I know you will do well. You sound very prepared and don't forget your NTS :)
big shot cpa, I will be taking Auditing next too. The book is so much smaller and looks manageable. I am just so happy to get FAR out of my life for a little while.
Sounds like we are having similar experiences with FAR: studied hard and didn't feel like the exam was too difficult. When I took it in January I thought I had over-studied but ended up with a 69; however, I did not give myself enough time for the simulations and just threw numbers in. I doubt I got any points then for the simulations.
Is anyone getting crazy-hard calculations this window?
25.5 hour and the beast will begin! Feeling well prepared but you never now how FAR out the questions will be. Good luck to everyone. One more day of review and it's on!
My calculations weren't "crazy hard" but tricky. Also, the questions were wordy most of the time. This time I didn't get many of the 2-line easy questions. I have no illusions that this is because I did well. Now that I think of it more, I wasn't sure on so many things. I did many of those educated guesses where I would eliminate 2 of the answers and guess from the other 2. Ahhh. My mind is so tortured. Now wait for 2 more months for the results. Unless I am in wave 1. The past year has been the worst in my life.
ChaFayCPA-
Sorry for the delayed response, I started studying for this thing back in October 2009. I have been lucky enough so far not to have to repeat any sections. I am currently getting my masters and my program has a very good CPA study program. I am currently in a class to help me with FAR and last year 90% of the people in the class passed the real exam. I am still really anxious though, I guess because this is my last one. I have been trying to follow becker to a tee and I also have that class that meets Monday through Thursday for 2 hours a day. I am just hoping that when I go back through the MC for the second time I will get much better grades than I did the first time. I usually do not get below a 70% on the MC but FAR has been kicking my but and I consider getting above a 70% to be awesome the first time around. I have seen other people having the same issue though so I am not too worried, yet. Ok well I am finishing up lecture 8 today, Governmental. I took the class 2 years ago but Becker was definitely a good refresher. Good luck with your studies! Keep us posted!!
Gotta question....when you all post scores of when you are taking your quizzes/doing mcq....are you posting your scores withOUT looking up any answers in the book/notes?
Tht's the way I do it. I try to answer each question, without looking at my notes at all. If I can't figure it out w/out them, then I mark it wrong, and then look it up.
I am scoring in the 50-60% first time around with this method...
Just wondering how everyone else does it.
Thanks!!!
Becker: Hope it goes well for you to!
CPA-Valenz: when I posted % on quizzes/mcqs that was without looking up any items in notes/books.
Hi folks, I hear lots of you refering to being in certain catergories like Wave 1 (test release) etc...Can somebody explain to me what this whole wave 1 and so on, really means and how it impacts CPA candidates?
If you fall into Wave 1 (test taken within a certain deadline - estimated to be the first week of the second month of the testing window - and no new simulation on it) then you receive your score roughly one month before all other candidates who fall in Wave 2.
So if am taking FAR on 8/31 what wave will I fall under??
Wave 2 for sure. It's the last day of the testing window. Wave 1 scores will be out sometimes around Aug 20, I think....
So I took BEC back in May, and passed, but I am in this prep class for my masters that is helping prepare me for FAR, but the class is also for BEC, our only grade in this class is from two mock exams...they are exact replicas of the real exams...I take the FAR one this Friday but I do not take the real FAR exam for 2 weeks from that date, then I have to take the BEC mock a week from Friday. So that is pretty much 3 CPA exams in the next 3 weeks. I feel good about the FAR mock coming up, but how would yall prep for the BEC if you already took it but feel real shady on the topics and still have to study for the real FAR exam. Any tips? I was planning on doing a turbo final review that involved skimming the 5 chapters and doing as many, since some sections have 500 questions I can't do them all, MC as I possibly can, while still doing final review for FAR...sound good? Any ideas or tips would be greatly appreciated!
