I was let go recently from a position because I sent an email to the wrong person (it was supposed to go to managers but went to executives). Before this I accidentally scanned in some invoices but caught them before they were processed. The system was setup as such that I could not delete them myself. I am halfway through the CPA exam and was wondering if this will hinder me too much from getting a job again. I am not looking for employment while I continue my exam because I want to relocate when I finish. Will this probably hurt me too much or will completing my certification make up for my termination?

I know this is an old thread but after reading some of the responses makes it difficult for me to keep my mouth shut. Who cares if employers MAY have reservations about gaps in your resume because you decided to take on cpa exams full time. You are looking out for yourself. Getting your cpa license will change your life forever so dont let someones five minute opinion get in the way of that. If a potential employer ask you why have gaps, you stand up straight and blurt right out “i wanted to devote 100% of my focus on passing the cpa exams”. Someones response was that employers will then think you are not able to multitask work and study, PLEASE thats why a surgeon doesnt perform open heart surgery in the cockpit. Cpa has a lower passing rate than the Bar exam and some law schools dont allow you to go to work fulltime while you are studying. So if you have the opportunity to make your life easier while studying then go for it. No one said life has to be a struggle and its not like youre taking time off of work to go surfing all day. You have to look at the bigger picture.

I was reading this thread worrying that I quit my job to study for this exam. I am a mother and don't want to take the time away I have with my son to study (did it to get a degree aged so much from lack of sleep!!!!). Anyways, I hated my job (always asked to do unethical stuff really I had to leave). Anyways my GPA is only 3.17 so I figured to get into a firm I need my CPA
Why is it now a days we are expected to work 40 – 60 hrs and study full time!!!!
This is probably Y the Wilbc made a mistake! up studying all night lol JK
I really don't care, I expect I will find a job eventually. I just hope I pass fast lol
@WIlbc don't worry, you will be fine 🙂 as long as you do not give-up !

Once you have those 3 letters after your name you will be super happy and no one can ever take that away from you especially joe schmoe in the HR dept who probably doesnt work there anymore because they are indispensable.

It is a negative for them to see someone who couldn't handle the responsibility/time management of a full time job and study and pass the CPA exam. I'm pretty sure it's expected.

Thats just like saying since Mary got a 90 on the exam so shouldnt everyone else. That would be extremely unfair. Just like you have posted in your signature comment that for some reason you exited the exam by mistake. So i guess i can say that you are not responsible enough to hire because the majority of people didnt have that problem. Yes that would be unfair. Its not about general characterization its about what works best for you. Im not sure what robotic world you live in, but here on planet earth, not everyone is the same. Use your imagination.

Granted, people have their reasons (job + exam + kids, one of them has to go and the kids aren't going anywhere, har har har), but generally speaking most people do both.

I had a 3 month gap in employment because I quit my job after graduating college and traveled. I also used that time to visit family that lives abroad. In interviews I was up front. I worked all the through college because I had to and then afterwards I decided to take some time off to see family. I do not think that ever counted against me. I was truthful and confident in my decision to take time off from working.

Right wrong or otherwise being a mom, particularly a single mom will work against you in the interview process (I say this from personal first hand experience, I am not projecting or assuming this.)
As for your husbands debt if you were married at the time, you're stuck with it on your credit report (also from first hand experience) just hope he's keeping up with it because if he's falling behind unfortunately that can also work against you as most employers run credit reports.

March 12, 2015 at 7:55 pm #657861law0915Participant@highlightnumb lol no. Not everyone is the same and that's why they only hire one person out of 20 or 100 for positions. I said it is expected and looks much better. I exited the exam accidentally because I thought I was exiting the teslet and did not see an option separately to do so, not that I have to justify my errors to you, but I'm just mind boggled at how invalid and unrelated your argument is to what I said. I'm human and I'm allowed to make a one time mistake under extreme conditions. That has nothing to do with juggling a full time job and the long term studying and passing of the CPA exam. It shows diligence, persistence, time management, commitment, strength of character, ambition, motivation, ect. Also, I mentioned nothing about exam failures in my point. Companies expect people to hold a job and pass the exam simultaneously. I have talked to many CPAs and managers and it definitely isn't a “strength” for the requirement of being unemployed to be able to pass the exam while they themselves and others they know have done it while working full time plus kids, ect. The exam is passable by many on this forum with responsibilities and issues well over a full time job and congrats to them!

The notion that an interviewer or a firm in general is NOT supposed to take into account that you had to quit your job to pass the exam is asinine. Of course they are going to take that into account. Not everyone is the same as you stated, and that is exactly what they are looking for. They are looking for ways to differentiate dozens of near identical applicants. Just because you (hilighter) think that it shouldn't matter, doesn't mean that it doesn't matter.
In trish's case, it is water under the bridge; what's done is done. But for some people on this forum who are asking for advice as to if they should quit to study full-time, it is unbelievable to me, and I guarantee more than a few hiring managers, that someone would quit full-time gainful employment to study for an exam. Suck it up, manage your time, and stay employed while passing like 99% of your (future) colleagues.
