First Crack at CPA Exam, Nervous

I am using Becker and am doing self study for BEC at the moment. I am getting really nervous. I am finishing up BEC 1 and my first homework assignment I got just below a 50% on. I did better on the next two, but it is disheartening. The simulations did not go well either. I thought I had a good answer, but I click for the solution it is usually very detailed and has everything imaginable in it.

It is weird. When I am not studying, I feel like I should be studying. Its nerve racking. I start with GT in the fall and want to have this done and if I fail one I am going to feel really dumb.

We have all been through this…the first time we try the homework its seems unimaginable to pass…but you will. Keep on doing the homework and tons of MCQ and it will eventually click. At one point or another most (not all) but most of us have failed a part or two (myself included) but you just have to continue. You are not dumb if you don't pass…you are human. It happens.

I found Becker to be extremely overwhelming at first but eventually I got the hang of it. Go at your own pace. Some things will be easier than others.

Good Luck…I am sure you will pass,.

I agree with the above post. There is a reason the pass rate for these exams on the first try is about 35% (haven't checked in a while so could be slightlyoff). Becker is a good software system to use but you also have to find what works best you. I found that reading the book myself and only watching the pages that I had trouble with most efficient as time is generally an enemy for me with these exams. Remember when working the MCQ, make sure you know why the questions are right and why the other answers are wrong. I wouldn't work the questions more than 3 times because you may memorize the answer yet not fully understand the concept.

You're not alone with the feeling of guilt that when you're not studying you should be studying. We all feel it because we know there is always something that can be looked over but you need to know your limits and tackle these exams one step at a time. For me I lose focus after about 2-3 hours of straight studying so I take a break and go at it again if I have the time. Never get discouraged and just keep plugging thats the key.

    Here we go Again

    AUD: (65)(66) 77
REG: (66) (48) destroyed me mentally.....
    FAR: (68) (66)(69)(71)
    BEC: (63) 75

I think that every time I start a new exam, that I will never know this information, ever and will NEVER pass it. (currently experiencing this with FAR) Welp, my scores tell another story! Just get into it and do the work and things come together.

    AUD: 84
    REG: 84
    BEC: 79
    FAR: 83

just relax, I self study Becker too, feel the same way

I do the pass master twice and review the ones I missed both time right before the exam, I think that works at least for me

    Far – 84

    Bec – 80

    AUD – 4/1/14

    Reg – TBD

@samdiegoCPA, thanks for the advice. It's also my first time studying for the cpa exams. In college i'd always over study for exams, feel like i wouldn't pass, and then would get a great score. I'm hoping this is the same for the CPA exam. its definitely tough and not very encouraging when these homeworks are so hard. i do agree that doing the MCQs too many times (as some people suggest) you'll eventually just memorize the answers.

    thanks for the advice

    BEC - 81 4/08/14
    FAR - 80 8/25/14 Thank you Jesus!
    REG - 69 (Nov 14),80 1/08/15 Thank God!
    AUD - 70 (May 14), xx 5/1/15

I definitely wish I was one of those people who got all 4 exams done in 4 months, but unfortunately LIFE (being a newlywed, stress, adjusting to newlywed life and cpa exam study life, as well as starting a job with a Big4 which I am very happy about) got in the way, just happy that I am passing period!!

I took BEC twice and got a 74 and 72 respectively. Being honest with myself, I didn't study as much as I needed to. My advice to myself and you is to study all sections equally. I think I also made a mistake and focused on Cost Accounting too long proportional to other sections. ( I could have used more work on other areas).
