Well I started my new job this morning after having some software training this past Saturday. I was a little nervous (okay a lot nervous really) but I think everything went well. I was given some clients to work on, mainly just data entry of checks and debits. I was so nervous though that I could barely eat my lunch. Hopefully I won’t be as nervous tomorrow and I can enjoy myself more. The people I work with are nice and they didn’t mind that I asked like a million questions. And its a small office too, so you don’t feel like just another person working there. It was kinda quiet though, as everyone worked on their stuff and kept to themselves except for the occasional jokes with each other and asking for help. Maybe the new kid awkwardness will fade in a few weeks. I was almost afraid to breathe too loudly lol.

Congrats and good luck to you. It sounds like you're in public accounting? You work on clients? Or are you a staff accountant in the accounting department of a firm?

I have been so busy trying to land a job that I never even considered how stressful the first few days were going to be!

Hang in there, I am certain you will feel more comfortable soon.

I'm working at a very small firm as a staff accountant. Me, the accounting supervisor, the payroll lady, the owner and the part-time receptionist. I mainly just input checks and deposits from bank statements that have been scanned in. I hope I get some other stuff to do soon as it's a little redundant. I actually felt so nervous today that I could still barely eat and I even thought about quitting and going back to my part-time retail job. But then I thought ‘Am I nuts? I can't quit now, I'm just getting started. Things will get better I just have to stick it out so I can get used to it'.

    Good Day,

Why are you very nervous ? Just do as your a71 picture says. Things will become easier and as you gain confidence; you will feel less uneasy and more eager to get things done. Good luck.

I am sorry if this offends but i cant stop laughing at the mental image of a 1st year staff accountant trembling through a lunch without touching the food because the responsibility plugging numbers is too much to handle.

In all seriousness, get some Xanax. It will help tremendously.

Just relax, you will be fine. Your first job is always going to be a bit awkward but once you are a fixture there people will open up to you, you will feel better about things and start to enjoy the office environment. Also, asking questions is good, but always try to figure something out yourself first, ie. come up with a possible solution to the issue and present that for validation. That way if you are right you will have learned something and they will appreciate your initiative, if you are wrong you will learn why you were wrong and they will be glad you asked.

Well today went much better. My nerves finally subsided and I was able to enjoy myself more. And it wasn't that the responsibility of plugging in numbers was too much to handle, that was no problem. It was being in a completely different environment than what I'm used to and being around people I don't know very well. I have had issues with my self esteem and confidence since high school and sometimes the old insecurities and fears rear up to kick me in the teeth. It just takes me a day or so to kick it back down and adjust. I nearly threw up my first night at college I was so nervous about being away from home, but after a night or two I adjusted.

Anyways, the work isn't bad and I learned some new stuff today so I wasn't bored or anything. And my supervisor said he's happy with my work and he thinks I'm doing very well. So I'm pretty stoked right now, especially since tomorrow is payday!
