format & formatting of actual SIMS

I am really fed up with the Becker format of the SIMS, but as I understand it, it is the exact same format as the actual CPA exam. Is that correct? The actual CPA exam doesn’t have a decent calculator where instead of hitting ‘clear’ on my keyboard, I have to use the mouse? And I know they are going to change to Excel in the upcoming changes, but for now is it really that terrible, horrible spreadsheet?

And when I enter numbers in the fields, sometimes it doesn’t ‘catch.’ Like when I enter a number, it usually gets formatted with commas, dollar signs. But if it doesn’t get formatted, then the program marks it wrong, even though the inputted data is correct. Same on the actual CPA?

And lastly, I can never tell when they want me to enter something with parentheses for credits or not. It is actually quite inconsistent. (I enter the parentheses, it’s wrong. The next time, I don’t enter the parentheses, and it’s wrong. Heck, I just did a problem where the sales quantity was supposed to be in parentheses, but the sales in dollars was not! I just want to smack these people.) Does anyone know if on the actual exam if you are penalized for not being a parenthetical mindreader?
