    Hello guys,

I am considering getting Lasik Eye Surgery this week. However, my only concern I have is that this will affect me studying for the CPA exams. I heard that Lasik can give you dry eyes and you can’t really stare at the screen for so long. Is this true? Can anyone (who has gotten Lasik Eye Surgery) explain how it is AFTER getting Lasik Eye Surgery and how it has affected you studying for the CPA exams and/or affected you sitting for the actual exam on Exam day?

My only concern is that I might get tired too easily or if I’m taking the actual exam in Prometric – my eyes will get really dry and I don’t think you can bring eye drops to you and I don’t want to keep going back and forth to the locker to get eye drops. I would really appreciate it if anyone can explain their story. Not sure what to do.

    Thanks!!!

I got it while still in school. I got over it real quick. The next day I was back to normal. You will have to put a lot of drops in your eyes daily for weeks though. After those (your surgeon will provide you with the first set) you'll have to continue to lubricate your eyes. I'm in Las Vegas and we have really dry weather. My eyes are always dry and I don't always put drops in. After the first day nothing was different for me. Except that i could wear sunglasses and could see when I woke up in the AM. It's a beautiful thing.

I was fine as well, and still am! Of course there are always risks, and dry eyes is definitely one of them. Can you put it off for a few more months until you are done? Would hate to have 2 or 3 months be torture while trying to get your eyes to work.

I got LASIK about a month before I took my first exam. I did have issues with staring at the computer at first, but it went away within two weeks (make sure to NOT spend too much time in front of the computer for those first few weeks – it really affected me). I was fine to take the test a month later (just put in drops before and after your test).

I don't know how many responses you will get, but I fit your bill having gotten LASIK and recently passed these darn exams. I can tell you this. The first week, just don't even try looking at a screen too much. Especially the first 48 hours. Your eyes are very sore and can only take about 30 mins of looking at a screen every couple hours. It obviously gets better as the week rolls on, but you will just want to close your eyes because it is very comfortable to do that.

Maybe take that time and buy and listen to the NINJA audio? It's a good place to get that knowledge base going.

After the first week you will still feel kinda funny (and absolutely blown away you can see without glasses/contacts!!) but you will be able to return to normal activities. You may get tired a little earlier in the day than you are used to, but that is also a temporary side effect.

I now do not notice anything wrong with staring at a computer from 7am to 12pm some days. The only thing is your eyes get a bit dry in the first month after surgery and during the drier (sp?) months of the year. I usually only have to put some artificial drops in my eyes once per month and it's usually caused by being low on sleep and drier months of the year. If you're worried, put some drops in before exams, it has no negative effect, just positive.

I will also add this, be careful with becoming dependent on the drops that they tell you to use for the first month after surgery. I had a friend who did and struggled with dry eyes for a long time. Listen to the doctors and put the drops in, but when you're past the required time of drops, ween yourself off. You'll be glad you did.

I had my surgery 1.5 years ago, and I think I didn't notice anything that was a burden with the procedure after about 2 months post surgery.

Lastly, this is a life changing procedure. I would advocate for it all day. You're going to love it. Feel free to ask more questions on it.

I got LASIK about 18 months ago. I was back at my desk the next day! I stared at my 3 monitors just like normal. I had no issues and it was one of the best things I have ever done in my life!!

A tip for you. Go buy a nice pair of Maui Jim sunglasses, preferably with hazel tinted polarized lenses. When I put those on, the world seems as crisp as one of those 4K televisions. It is a little weird how crisp things are.

It took about 2-3 months for nighttime glare from lights to wear off. Don't be alarmed by it.

Wow guys – thanks a lot for all the comments and support. I have been contemplating of getting this done for months. And I just never knew when the right time was. A part of me tells me to do it now (I just have 2 more CPA exams left) and part of me is telling me to do it AFTER my 2 CPA exams are over. I just don't want my CPA exams to be affected by this.

However, I don't know if I want to wait any longer. I really hate glasses and I can't even work out when I'm in the gym, etc. What kind of made me nervous is I saw this YouTube video (posted below) that show the complications and risks of Lasik Eye Surgery by Dr. OZ. So, that really made me think twice about this lasik eye surgery. If ANYONE else wants to share their experience – I would love to hear it. It really is a life changing experience, so, I would love to hear anything else. Thanks a lot guys.

LASIK is fantastic and a great solution but, unless it is very necessary, why even do it right now? You have enough stress on your plate without worrying about this. This is a stress you can control.

How did you decide on what doctor/company to go to? There are a quite a few in Chicago that I have looked at but they were based off Yelp reviews. It's hard to trust the reviews.

I would like to say because I asked when I was there. You are NOT allowed to use eye drops (or chapstick for that matter) during your break. Although they do let you use prescriptions so if they are prescription eye drops you should be okay.
