Getting my foot in the door

    Hello everyone,

I am currently a graduate student studying Accounting (Bachelors in Finance) and I plan on taking the first part of the CPA exam next January once I meet all of the qualifications. Until then, I wanted to start an internship possibly in a small CPA firm but I have been unable to even lock in an interview. I currently reside in NYC and figured there would be an influx of local firms hiring but I have not had any luck. What advice would you give me in getting my foot in the door so I can start receiving credit towards the working qualifications of obtaining the CPA license? Thank you

    BEC - 79
    AUD - 7/22/15
    REG - 8/31/15
    FAR - Sometime in November

I would check with your department head or one of your professors. I got my internship in my bachelors program through my school.

If you've only been trying since the first of the year I think it's your timing. Pretty sure most internships are lined up in the early summer or in the fall for the following year.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

I know my timing is off but I was not enrolled last Fall. And its mostly top 4 that hire in the fall. I'm looking for a small CPA firm.

While I do believe that generally firms will line up their internships during the summer for the following school year, my interview took place in December and I was hired in April. I've been working for them (the Department of Defense) for the last 4 years and hope to switch to a permanent position later this summer (depending on what they choose to offer me). If you are at all interested in a governmental internship, try looking on USAJobs for palace acquire or copper cat programs.

Sorry I can't help on getting into small CPA firms other than to try to network through professional organizations. I attend monthly meetings for the Internal Auditor Association (IAA) which is attended quite often by auditors from local CPA firms. Many times these professional meetings are a source for CPE hours, so they are well attended.

small firms don't typically hire recruiters since they can't afford it and many times don't post on big job sites. Go directly to the source and email the partners out of the blue. My 2cents

    Licensed CPA!
