Anyone else not a huge fan of the Gleim REG book? I didn’t mind the FAR text but the REG book… WOOOOFFFF, talk about a struggle! Luckily the lecture helps me understand what I read in the text. Anyone else have an opinion on the REG book?

Ha! I just started the Gleim REG book after taking FAR, too! I was just telling my coworker this morning how the one positive if I do fail FAR is I can stop reading this painfully awful REG book. It's terrible!

Haha, glad I'm not alone. Thanks! Looking at a similar post from a few years ago, it doesn't look like the book got any more interesting in the past few years!

I really thought I'd gotten through the worst of it with FAR and AUD, but REG is definitely the worst of the three books so far. That, and the professor in the REG videos stumbles over his words enough that it is distracting for me. We can suffer together!

Hopefully we can both pass REG first shot and not have to suffer through it too long!

My biggest tip that I can give you regarding the Gleim books are to the skim/scan first before you dive in and read. Read all of the headers, bolded words, etc. Get familiar w/ the topics, subtopics. There is a checklist of review units, get familiar with that first, then dive in. I flipped through the entire BEC book, glancing briefly at every page, yesterday, so I could know what I'm getting myself into. This is an idea I came up with while I was cramming for my Reg test last week, and I wish I would have done that more frequently during my preparation.

Edit: @sarah40460 I gave up on the lectures because of that guy lol…I couldn't find a single lecture of him not stuttering.

I am forced to have Gleim for my MBA (my employer is paying for it), and I am using it for my 150. I have taken the AUD class and now am in REG. AUD wasn't great by no means, but the REG is pretty bad.

kiester, definitely go with Roger, it is so much better if you think you'd like his teaching style.

The Gleim book has twice what you need for REG. They need to cut the book in half. They went over BK's for farmers and credit unions which will never be on the test.

I never watch the videos. Those suck (for all 4 parts).

hahah! I cannot read their REG book, too boring and so confusing. They spend too much time on useless stuff, like 1040 credits, phaseout. So I used Becker book 2014 version and I think it worked pretty well. Their Far book is fine, I haven't read other two books, but I have decided to sell them in Amazon and buy 2014 Becker books.

    Reg, 60 86
    Aud, 74 82
    Bec, 70 81

    Reg 7/10/2015, 60, 2/27/2016, 86
Aud, 5/9/2016, 74 (ouch), 7/26/2016, I cannot wait to take this test again
    Bec, 6/10/2016, 70,9/8 retake

I'm so glad I'm not alone with this REG book. I stopped watching the lectures, because I can't deal with the lecturer or the time it takes out of my schedule. Also, the book is so confusing. I read the chapter once and then just use the core concepts from then on after and listen to the audio when I'm travelling about.

    We got this!!

kiester, I would say that Roger is even better than Becker for the tax portion of regulation, and I'm using both for the Tax part. Roger explains a lot better and goes into more detail as to why a certain tax law is require. Becker assumes that you already have a good grasp of tax rules. For the Blaw portion, I will definitely use Becker, I think Peter Olinto is the guru for business law.

@ Martin, I think Pete Olinto is the mainstay of the entire becker review courses. All his lectures are great and engaging. I wish Tim could learn from his teaching style instead of highlight this, highlight that, bla bla! Just listen to his r3 lectures.

SpiritofGod, the problem with his tax lectures is that he gives you the end result, so you can memorize how to do a certain task, but he skips the steps as to why we doing something in a certain way. He assumes you already know. He covers sections 1231,1245,1250 depreciation recapture in a few pages. Roger devotes a whole chapter just for those sections. The same with Estates and Trusts. I'm doing both but now I see why people complain about Becker's tax sections. With the little info they give you is hard to get a high score on simulations. Becker;'s lecture on Blaw however I think will be enough to pass and Rogers just takes too long to explain law since he is not an attorney.
